Shoetying?

My son (diagnosed ADHD) does not tie shoes yet. Every time I've tried to practice it with him, he gets very frustrated. At what age did your ADHD child learn to tie shoes? Should I give up?

Shoe tying?

Great question, I'm eager to read others reply. My 9 yr old, going into 4th grade has not mastered this skill yet. I'll usually "choosing my battles" and frankly, tying shoes is at the bottom, with that said, I'm not able to find his size anymore in velcro :(

shoe tieing

When I saw my then 2 year old daughter buttoning and snapping and my then 6 year old son not even able to tie his shoes or snap his jeans shut, I knew there was a problem. His counselor finally recommended an OT eval and he has been in OT for about 4 months now. He can now button his shirt, snap his jeans and tie his shoes (still not well and he still gets frustrated but not as bad as before). We found out that his eyes do not cross the midline so she has us doing exercises with him for that. Last year he couldn't hit the ball off of a T and this year he hit balls going 42 mph from a pitching machine. His handwriting is improving and tons of other things. He is taking pride in what he has accomplished. The OT is wonderful!

Zip Laces!!

My husband uses a product called zip laces for his shoes. My husband is a triathlete and it helps him get his shoes on quickly for a race. When we saw that our son was having trouble learning to tie his shoes we started to use ziplaces for his shoes too. They are wonderful. Now he can have the cool shoes like everyone else. They are not in most stores. They are considered a specialty item so will probably have better luck finding them online. Look at Triathlete sites if you are having trouble finding them anywhere else.
