You aren't defective, just your brain processes things differently. If there's a learning center in your area, maybe they'd be willing to help you with your math. Perhaps a community college or a large university with a strong program for people with learning disabilities could help as well. You don't necessarily need a degree to be a counselor. You may be able to work within a religious community where all that is required is faithful attendance and desire. There's also non-profit groups you can work with like in a women's shelter, a foster home, an immigrant assistance organization, etc. where you could still use your counseling skills.

Drew Carey got kicked out of college twice for poor school performance and never finished. Chris Rock dropped out of high school and later got a GED and worked various fast food jobs before becoming famous. Paul Orfalea, founder of Kinko's, has ADD and dsylexia. So you see, it doesn't have to stop you. A counselor told us in group that, often we think of ourselves as less than. She said to think of ourselves as more than because we struggle with the same struggles as everybody else, plus we struggle with our unique learning differences. Good luck and keep your chin up!

In the parlance of DISC (Google Marston + DISC) she has a Moderate 'D,' a very high 'I,' a low 'S' and a low to moderate 'C.'

I'm a sales manager and believe that most of my best outside sales people are ADD: they hate office work, sales meetnigs and filling out reports. They aren't detail oriented and make mistakes in their reports.

On the other hand, they are great at cold calling and prospecting, and make more money than anyon else in the company. They have DISC profiles that are High D, High I, Low S and Low C and represent about 4% of the general population.
