hello..

i am highly upset because i just recently found out that i have adhd now that i am 23 yrs old. when i was younger in elementary school. they told me that i was already struggling, but they never talked to my parents about anything that i have. also, when got to high school my grades were slipping in math especially... i kept struggling in math and it got so bad that i have never got my diploma. i still don't have my diploma yet. i tried talking to this principal at the academy that i have went to about getting me a wavier, but for some reason in louisiana. the school system is so bad. they wouldn't even give me a wavier. they expect me to do the exam over again after 6-7 times of failing it. also, i even tried talking to this lady about writing my story in the newspaper. she said she would talk to her editor about it. i really want to work hard so i can finally get a degree in counseling that i have been working so hard for.

Don't let your ADD run your life

You aren't defective, just your brain processes things differently. If there's a learning center in your area, maybe they'd be willing to help you with your math. Perhaps a community college or a large university with a strong program for people with learning disabilities could help as well. You don't necessarily need a degree to be a counselor. You may be able to work within a religious community where all that is required is faithful attendance and desire. There's also non-profit groups you can work with like in a women's shelter, a foster home, an immigrant assistance organization, etc. where you could still use your counseling skills.

Drew Carey got kicked out of college twice for poor school performance and never finished. Chris Rock dropped out of high school and later got a GED and worked various fast food jobs before becoming famous. Paul Orfalea, founder of Kinko's, has ADD and dsylexia. So you see, it doesn't have to stop you. A counselor told us in group that, often we think of ourselves as less than. She said to think of ourselves as more than because we struggle with the same struggles as everybody else, plus we struggle with our unique learning differences. Good luck and keep your chin up!

ADHD and outside or retail sales

Don't despair. Our daughter has ADHD and is the star salesperson of every retail store at which she has worked.

She loves the varied pace as well as interacting with people!

In the parlance of DISC (Google Marston + DISC) she has a Moderate 'D,' a very high 'I,' a low 'S' and a low to moderate 'C.'

I'm a sales manager and believe that most of my best outside sales people are ADD: they hate office work, sales meetnigs and filling out reports. They aren't detail oriented and make mistakes in their reports.

On the other hand, they are great at cold calling and prospecting, and make more money than anyon else in the company. They have DISC profiles that are High D, High I, Low S and Low C and represent about 4% of the general population.

If you have a profile like this one or our duaghter's, you are set for life!
