finally diagnosed

My niece has been very unorganized for years, can't hold a job and always has trouble in school. She is now 25 with a daughter of her own. My sister has not been much help as I think she has ADD also. My question is, since my niece was diagnosed 2 months ago(doesn't have the right meds yet) she seems to have gotten worse. Like almost an excuse for her home being a dump and her 4 year old daughter not being kept well either. She said the doctors said that she will get worse before she gets better. Does this sound right to anyone?

Patience, please...

Just because you now have a name and/or meds for the "chronic disorganization" does not mean it will be cured. I had some TERRIBLE reactions/side-effects to the first four or five medications they tried to give me. It took almost a year to find the right combination/dosage. It would have been nice to have someone to leave my 3 y.o. with on occasion during that time. Also, a lot of what we do is learned behavior (i.e. - both my parents are ADHD & in denial) and DEEPLY ingrained habits that are very difficult to extract and relearn. Be patient and try to understand it is a process. Even with medication it is still a LOT of HARD WORK and we still can get easily overwhelmed. Be patient, love her for her positive qualities and notice when she just do something remotely "organized" or for the days that time management actually does work.
