ADHD boss, ADHD secretary...aw crap...

So, newly diagnosed Inattentive ADHD, reading enough articles and books to make a librarian blush. A lot of what I have seen encourages bosses to have someone who works for them who is highly organized and can take the slack of the things I'm just not skilled for. A farmer for a hunter, if you buy that theory. Great, wonderful. I've started doing that. And I'm noticing more and more that I'm having to follow up on these things. In a recent conversation, she tosses out several key terms which raised suspicions that she may also have some attention issues, if not actual ADHD.

So, am I screwed? She's a good worker, I just have to follow up with a lot of little things that I'd rather not. I can't see replacing her, it would just be for my convenience, not the benefit of the organization.

Any suggestions?

Could you salvage her by moving her into a different position?

Sometimes you have a wonderful, creative person that is disorganized and needs reminders, which it sounds like you don't want to deal with. If your organization is big enough, might she be transferred to a different department which utilizes her skills better? Also, at my old job, we worked closely with a "Welfare to Work" program where participants would still receive their benefits but would work at an organization for about no more than 20 hours a week to gain confidence, job skills and experience on their resume. Maybe you could get someone from a similar program to assist her. Or offer an internship to a budding college student interested in your industry. In most cases, it wouldn't really cost your organization anything.

not an option...

Well, given that we have a staff of 4 total, no, moving her not an option. :-) I'm more just trying to figure out ways that I can work with her. Whether she has ADHD or not, I really have no idea. But I just notice things that need following up on, which I already have a hard time doing for myself.

We have a large volunteer base. That might be a place to pull from. Don't know about working with another non-profit or doing an internship. That sounds like one more thing to keep up with, but maybe not.

Maybe I just need to have a conversation with her about this, and see if we can figure out how to help each other. Any thoughts on that would be appreciated.

ADHD admin

Have you considered asking your admin to take a DISC profile (Google Marston + DISC)?

If s/he has a High D, High I, Low S and Low C, and the job requires patience and attion to detail, s/he may be in the wrong job.

On the other hand, s/he will have a Hunters Profile and should be able to generate revenues 50 - 100 times her salary, more when trained.

People with High D's and I's represent only about 4% of the general population!
