Refusing to go to Therapy

My daughter is 16 and has decided that there is nothing wrong with her and she will no longer go to therapy. At this time, we are about to get her reevaluated as something besides ADHD is going on. Has anyone had this issue? What do you do to get them to go?

Teen May Not Want to Be "Different"

Hi there,

Your question has been touched upon in different ways on our site. For one, you might like this new video from ADHD expert Ari Tuckman, where he explains how to have the treatment talk with those who are resistant to seeking help for their ADD/ADHD.

In an expert Q&A, Dr. Silver talks about teens who start refusing to take medication (not the same as therapy, I understand, but the answer may still be helpful):

"Early adolescence is a difficult time. Teens do not want to be different and desperately want to be accepted. It is not uncommon for the student with ADHD to be cooperative about taking medication in school until reaching middle school, and then refuse to do so. It is best to respect this need not to be seen as different."

Best of luck,

Mary
