New to all this

My 6 yr was recently diagnosed ADHD and we started him on Concerta (18mg). He is in kindergarten and has struggled from day one. He was in daycare prior to that and while had a few behavior issues, the real problems didn't start until he went on to kindy. We started the medication 5 days ago and so far have seen no significant difference. His teacher stated that had she not been told he was on medication, she never would have known. We really want to help him succeed in school - he loves it and is smart on top of it all - but it seems like every step we take results in failure.

We have changed his diet to be more protein-rich and also added an Omega-3 supplement. We have tired some behavioral changes as well but so far nothing seems to work. I just don't know what more to do for him.

i totally feel for you! My son is 8 and we have been dealing since he was 3. Kindergarten was hard from the 2nd week for him. They left him unattended and he left school and crossed a major hwy before they found him. He then got an attendant who is with him all the time. We have done all the meds (even though we really didn't want to we had no choice) He was on Concerta for a little over a year and it just quit working he is on Focalin now doing some better. It really is just a matter of finding out what combination works for him. Best Wishes. .

My son is 6 too, almost 7, and has been struggling since he was 2. He was in daycare when he was young, and seemed to always be the "trouble child". It does get harder for them when they reach school age because they have to focus a lot more on particular work, and sit still for periods of time. My son started with Adderall which only helped his hyperactivity not his focus, now he is on Concerta which helped for awhile, but now seems to be wearing off. We are going back to the doctor for re-evaluation of his medication. I also work closely with his teacher, who also has a son with ADHD. She implemented a book for him in which she gives him a stamp in his book for every 15 minutes he doesn't talk and disrupt the class, and for every 5 stamps he gets a small prize, or he can save up his stamps for bigger prizes. It's some what new, and works sometimes, but in talking to a behavioral specialists, positive reinforcement usually works better for ADHD kids. You may want to talk to his teacher and explore some things she can do to help your child in the classroom. Also, the book she stamps comes home every day for me to see and sign, so he knows I am going to see it every day. It's still a struggle, but I'm told that their medications will need to be adjusted frequently.

I am pretty new to this too.

My son is 4 and was diagnosed about 4 months ago. He is on adderall right now, and we just had to increas it. The preschool teacher he has, has done wonders for him, because she has a brother with ADHD. My hardest part is finding the right discipline and finding the right things to say to give him the confidence he needs when he starts kindergarden in August. He is still somewhat aggresive, and lashes out when he gets mad.
