My son is 6 too, almost 7, and has been struggling since he was 2. He was in daycare when he was young, and seemed to always be the "trouble child". It does get harder for them when they reach school age because they have to focus a lot more on particular work, and sit still for periods of time. My son started with Adderall which only helped his hyperactivity not his focus, now he is on Concerta which helped for awhile, but now seems to be wearing off. We are going back to the doctor for re-evaluation of his medication. I also work closely with his teacher, who also has a son with ADHD. She implemented a book for him in which she gives him a stamp in his book for every 15 minutes he doesn't talk and disrupt the class, and for every 5 stamps he gets a small prize, or he can save up his stamps for bigger prizes. It's some what new, and works sometimes, but in talking to a behavioral specialists, positive reinforcement usually works better for ADHD kids. You may want to talk to his teacher and explore some things she can do to help your child in the classroom. Also, the book she stamps comes home every day for me to see and sign, so he knows I am going to see it every day. It's still a struggle, but I'm told that their medications will need to be adjusted frequently.
