Scholarships

Hi, @ 100 yrs ago I had to drop out of college because of.......I NOW know, ADD! Despite how hard I worked, my 'personality or character defects' always got me in trouble or passed over for the promotion. Misdiagnosis of Bi Polar Affect DisOrder and spent 16-17 yrs being a good 'patient' and took that poison, lithium, until past the point of tolerance. blha blah blah. Still considered by all who know, and supposedly loved me, that very few actually 'liked' me. Observed many a coworker race from their desks when they saw me coming, afraid I'd waste the remainded of their work day w/ a lot of nonsense. ( very painful, actually) OK, finally get diagnosis of ADD - age 49 by then. Shocked my employers by tripling work production in 60 days!! Soon received several job offers, felt great, but I still hadn't learned how to tell who was credible & who was out to get what they could and of course, picked the 'employer most likely to promise a lot and give the least' ( in fact after being cheated out of @ 150K in commission, I walked out and subsequently picked 2 more companies with the same attitude!) Sooooooooo, I'm back in college. I tried a Comm College first rather than reapplying to the university I had left so many years before, in case it turned out that I still wasn't the studious type. But it happpened that I was, in fact the school likes me so much they forgot to tell me I'd finished my general education requredments 3 times over!! (unit-wise) (wonderful thing, college counselors!)

I plan on returning to my old (or is it just me who is now old?) university in Feb 2012. My dad is 86 yrs old, it's not like he's able to pay my expenses, I never married (gee, ain't that a shock!) and my only income is Social Security Disability. I don't plan on living in a dorm this time (yeah, that's me ''wild and crazy old enuf to be a grandma in a NOW co-ed dorm! yeah right' ) So, I've applied for assistence thru FAFTA (FASTA???) but the grant money won't be enough for all that's needed. Where might I find out about SCHOLARSHIPS (no loans, doubt anyone would give a 59 yr old woman approval when I won't be around long enough to pay it back)? It's not Harvard or Stanford, unfortunately, i plan on a Calif State University, but if you haven't been in school for a while, the cost of books alone could wipe one out financially! I have a high GPA (except for that C in algebra) WHERE DO I LOOK FOR COLLEGE MONEY AT THIS POINT IN TIME AND LIFE? I still have a lot to give, and a lot of dreams that I'm trying to swallow due to the reality of the time factor, but I AM WORTH FULLY EDUCATING (in case anyone wants to know) I am actually quite smart despite what goes on in my brain.......so HELP, NEED ADVISE FOR OBTAINING SCHOLARSHIPS TO COMPLETE BA. i EVEN HAVE SOME MARKETABLE SKILLS!! i DON'T KNOW WHERE TO LOOK OR WHAT SPECIFICS MIGHT HELP QUALIFY ME, Hey! my father is a WWII vet! Does that help? I live in the Los Angeles County area of Calif and am a 2 1/2 X native (of California, that is), Thanks any suggestions would mean a lot. It is NOT easy being a sophomore for nearly 40 years!

FINDING MONEY TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL

Your story sounds alot like some of the college students who I serve at our local community college. Our program gives more intense services to students who are first-generation college, low income or have a disability. Here are my suggestions for looking for money and to help improve your chances of success: 1. See if your college has a Student Support Services Program (TRIO grant through USDOE). They can provide you with personal/academic support and may also be able to direct to you available financial resources. 2. Register with your Disabilities Office on your campus to ensure accommodations for your ADHD. 3. See if you have a state agency in your area called Vocational Rehabilitation. In NC, they are an agency that helps retrain people with disabilities who need education and have barriers that have gotten in their way. Even tho you have applied for a pell grant (FAFSA), they may help supplement the difference in costs. 4. Since you qualify for a pell grant, you may also qualify for work-study. This is through your financial aid office on your campus. You can work on campus and get an hourly wage which is usually minimum wage but can help with the cost of gas. 5. If your dad is a WWII vet, I would contact the VA in your area and ask about scholarships for children of veterans. It seems like I have students who get scholarships this way.

My final piece of advice is this: Find someone at your college whether it be a counselor, faculty advisor, or other employee who could act as a "coach". People with ADHD sometimes have difficulty making their way through the maze and since, as you said, you have "already completed your general education requirements 3 times", I know you want to make your time more efficient towards finishing your degree!

Please be aware of your strengths and your weaknesses and be willing to be honest with yourself. It sounds like you have a ton of potential and with the right focus, you can be successful! Best of luck.
