It all depends on your child...

For a while strettera worked wonders form my son- but as with all the medications he has been on- it eventually stopped working for him, BUT i will also caution you on this- my son was recently diagnosed with Bipolar disorder as well. Strettera worked geret for him till he reached a cretain age and we started noticing "mood swings" which im goingto assume at this point was part of the bipolar developingbecasue eh ahs consistantly had one week a month where he is "off the chain" and no adhd medication works for him. When we first started the medication it tooka little while but he was a new kid- he was happy and started taking leaps and bounds in school- where they thought he wasn't learing anythign becasue he couldnt tell them anything he learned- once strettera kicked in he was able to explain to his teacher who was previously "afraid he would poison her coffee" that he was listteninghe just couldnt sit still before. He was fianlly able to write and color in the line- before he would take a balck crayon (always black) and color the entire page dark black. Strettera helped us realize there was help and hope for my son, he was however matabalizing the medication too quickly (or so we thought) and by the time school was almost out he was compleatly back to the nonmedicated verson of my son. Though there are other children at the school who have done wonders on strettera and still are on the medicaton. We have tried strettera, vyvance,a nd currently we are taking Focalin and Resperidone and it seems to be working wonders for him. Good luck in your serach for the right medication for your child- do not be afraid to tell the dr that you don't think the medication is right for your child if it makes them too grogy or isn't being effective long enough- it has taken us 2 long years to get the right medications for my baby boy but i was also very open and honest with ym dr- make sure you bring in notes from school and daycare to collaborate what youa re saying this often helps the dr realize your not the only person who is seeing the behaviors.
