Does the 504 plan "label" my child

If my 11 year old son does get the accomodations of the 504 plan, will this affect how other teachers, school officials, etc treat him or label him? Or does it really matter as long as he is able to succeed? Not sure if anyone else has had to make the decision to go through the process.

short answer

In my experience as a mom, the short answer is YEP SURE DOES.

Allegedly "less than" an IEP (or at least that's what school's usually tell you-although that's a really convenient answer for them.

The long answer is, failing (academically, socially, etc. ) is also going to label your kid, if hr or she does not get the support they need. My advice? go for the more USEFUL label, the one that actually does something for your kid. Make sure YOU remember labels are for people who don't want or cannot take the time and effort to think for themselves and form an intelligent opinion, and do NOT forget that fact, or let yourself succumb to belief in a label.

That's just my take on the whole label issue. That is one mountain that turns to a grain of sand really fast.
