Just realized son's Strengths and Weakness are same as mine!

One of those Aha! moments. About a year ago my mom and I went to a conference called "Smart But Scattered". We went because of my ADHD son and for continuing ed credits. I had not been diagnosed yet but joked that the title could be my life story. Anywho . . . I decided to tackle reading the book I bought back then now that I am medicated and might actually be able to follow through on ideas for my son. There are questionaires in there to find out what executive skills strengths and weaknesses you have. Lo and behold we have almost identical strengths and weaknesses. No wonder I "get" his school behavior and chore avoidance like no one else.

Our top strength is "goal-directed persistence". Wow! I think we can really use that to help him move forward. It also explains why incentives work well on him. He also likes to work for money which gives me hope he won't get fired repeatedly in spite of our weaknesses! LOL

Anybodye else read the book Smart But Scattered or that has the same ADHD attributes as their child? How have you used that to help them?

I so feel your pain

My son was diagnoses a few years ago with ADD with some hyperactivity. About a year ago my husband told me that he thinks I have it too, and the 'Light bulb' went off. Of course I do. I had the same struggles in school, test taking was a nightmare, and we are so similar in our personalities it would make sense. At first I felt terrible that I saddled him with this, but I had to realize how to help him get through school. It is a battle with school, but something we strive to do better at daily. I finally tried meds, and found such an improvement in my ability to focus. I tend to have issues at work, due to my 'millions' of project I always have going. We laugh at it around our house, so it helps. There is that fine line of being capable of doing a good job, and unable to focus on the task at hand. It is a daily battle, that usually takes all of my patience. I guess that's what happens when your children are so much like you.

My son and I "get" each other!

Oh, meandmykido... sigh. Honey, you didn't "saddle" your son with this. This is simply a common trait between the two of you. I liken it to brown eyes or an artistic nature (my son and I have both. Believe me, both of us having ADD is a BLESSING in this house. The husband and daughter both have Asperger's and all that linear literal anal retentive stuff drives me bats! My son and I simply GET each other. He's abstract and easily distracted... if we're in the middle of a conversation and one of us has a "June Bug Moment" ("hey I was reading this book today and oh look! a june bug!") we're much more accepting of it. So this is simply a way for you and your son to connect on another level. As he's younger, it's a way for you to teach him while teaching yourself! Beside learning to work with my son's and my ADD, I've had to learn a lot about Aspergers. So the learning never stops. Very interesting place, our house.
