attitude changes

my oldest son is in 5th grade. Some days he actually goes to school in a good mood...those are few and far between though....EVERY day he comes home in the worst mood ever - almost as if the school was physically painful for him. He isn't very popular and has picked the wrong crowd to think are cool....I know that he isn't being bothered by kids physically and the teacher says he is fine in school. When he gets home he is so surley and cross - he has actually started cursing at me - screaming at me and calling me a name (rhymes with witch) and using the F word. We have tried everything from making him pay $ for bad language, to taking away his ipod or ds for punishment. It never helps He is on meds and they seem to work well for school - His therapist says its normal because he has to hold it all together at school all day so we should cut him a break at home - But there are days I almost dread the after school time because it is so hateful here. is this part of puberty or are we doomed
