Needing support

I have just joined this website. Really excited to hopefully gain support and advice from other parents with a ADHD child. I have a son Jack who is 6 and in Kindergarden. He is a very bright, curious, energetic young boy. Jack was a difficult young child who changed my whole outlook on raising children. Savannah who is 10 is a sweet calm well behaved child, is his older sister. I feel lost as a parent to Jack. I feel so out of control of him and not sure how to rein in his behavior. So, far we have done alternative medicine, karate, horse therapy and finally using Ritiln. Everything works for a little while...then slowly the bad and violent behavior returns. (now I an crying) School is hard for him, he has trouble sitting still, listens, and acts out in the classroom, and home. Today I had a meeting with his teacher and principle about his behavior. Sitting there, listening to the way he talks and acts in class I felt so helpless. I have no solutions...I am out of ideas. I feel like I am rambling a bit, but I'm upset and just need some support. thanks for listening.

response to feeling alone

Hi there! I was wondering where you live? I was also wondering if you have tried music therapy? Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Your school (LEA) must provide extra curriculum activites for your child. I am a former Special Education Teacher, and now have my own company devoted entirely to advocacy work. I was wondering if your school is pressuring you to medicate your child? If so you should have a serious discussion weighing the pros and cons. Many of this type of medications stunt growth. I feel for you. Its so hard and you try so hard and yet end up crying yourself because you can only do so much. First off give yourself a pat on the back. You are here and you are doing everything you can for child the best way you know how. I don't like the drugs. I like the karate it does seem to help. School is horrible. They complain to you they pull you in the principles office. Of course he can't sit still he has ADD. Do they let him get up half way through. Do they put music on. If your in a public school, turn it back on them. Ask them how do they plan to give your son an education. He is a special needs kid and need to provide for that. Private you need to deal with it on your own. Get a therapist to help him with his school. A montisori might work better. Finally there are games, even a dsi game that can help. Its called brain age. Also there are soem other computer games. Also you are right outside time is very important. I found out my child was getting kept in at recess because she could not finish work in class. I said to the school you are not allowed to do that more than once a week and if they dont finish in class send it home so I can help. A tutor would also help. Pleae come back again if you need to vent. We have been there and we will back you up

Thanks, His school is trying to help, he does go to a Montessori school. It is a charter though, and the special needs services are limited. The karate was great I thought but Jack didn't really like it and soon got distracted from it. I will look into Brain age.

Thank you for the support.

Hang in there

Hi,

I hope my posts haven't made you feel worse. I truly feel for all the parents here. I did feel the need to stand up for some of the kids being discussed. I feel for you. You sound like a very loving mother who's having a really difficult time. It sounds like you are doing everything you know how. I hope things get better and that things get easier for you and your family. About music therapy, I just had lunch with a music therapist and we talked about all the great things they can do for kids. It's not hype, there is scientific proof behind the positive effects of music. Don't let the unbelievers discount music's amazing abilties to heal and transform. It may not be the singular thing that is necessary for change, but it's a real therapy that can make a real difference. Bless you and your family. Hang in there. People are thinking about you and pulling for you. You're not alone.

ADHD Experience

You are indeed strong and amazing mother, It is not your fault, Raising kids with ADHD/ADD is not that easy, but you made it. I have a friend who has a son with ADHD, I saw very well how she struggle to raised him. One alternative treatment for ADHD I suggested her from what I have read through internet is sending her son to a therapeutic boarding school. It could be a difficult decision for her at first because it's not easy for parents like us to be physically separated with our children, however the benefits often far outweigh the anxiety of separation. Now her son is doing well in a therapeutic boarding schools. She often come to visit.
