School Troubles

I'm so depressed at this point I dont know if I'm comming or going. My daughter is 9 and school is becomming a big issue. We changed her to a private school this year because she was not getting along socially but her grades were great. She even only got 1 wrong on the math florida fcat. But because of the social issues we felt it would be best to give her a fresh start. The private school is turning into a disaster. It started well. My daughter is great at making friends. Its keeping them that is the problem. We were having play dates with one family and all was going well. My daughter and myself tried another play date with another kid which did not go well. Now both are no longer friends. The one she was having play dates with was going well so I dont know if it was her ADD intensity or something else. . Now though on top of having friend issues she is falling behind at school and failing tests. She can not focus or concentrate. She is even failing math tests her easiest subjects. Last night I spent over 4 hours doing homework with her. Its getting out of hand. I need to get her out of the school but I'm hoping you could help me with ideas on how to help her keep the friends she makes. I'm working on focusing games and concentration. Any advice would be appreciated.

Making and Keeping friends for Children with ADD/ADHD

Dear Kels,

I am so sorry to hear about your daughter's struggles at school. It sounds like you're doing a terrific job trying to give her the best chance at academic and social success, which says a lot about you as a parent!

On ADDitude, many of our readers deal with similar issues every day, so you're never alone. Please find plenty of resources to help you with the social challenges here.

Some that are particularly useful, I find, are:

All the best,
