new to all of this

needing any info my daughter was diagnosed ADD 1-18-11 she is 9yrs old and in 3rd grade she started Vyvanse today...the constant movement has stopped the non stop chatter is gone along with her appetite(side effect I'm told) She has been having problems in school reading below grade level sloppy writing ,day dreaming, short attention span, I guess I'm wondering if she will ever catch up to where she should be grade level wise.

Girls and AD/HD

A great book for her age is Patricia Quinn's "Attention Girls!" I just don't thing most doctors and most schools are as up do date as they need to be regarding the difficulties girls face with this, and the differences between how this affects girls vs boys. There are studies that show girls are more likely to have academic problems, and that may be because the "squeaky wheel gets the grease." Boys with AD/HD are more noticeable, usually. Girls get shunted aside more often. I've really had to fight to get my daughter's AD/HD taken seriously at school. I don't think you should just give up on her catching up to her peers. You may just want to get all the information you can on how girls and boys differ on this issue, and on what the school's responsibilities are in regards to giving your daughter a fair chance at getting a quality education. Somebody needs to write a book about how those two things intersect!

Daughter

How is the vynase doing for her. I am raising a grandson who is 6 and just got put on concerta. It is making him more hyper right now. We may have to up the dosage. It is wearing me out. Can you get your daughter some tutoring to get her up to speed? Don't give up....It's not her fault. Also realize that she may have to change medications a few times before they find one that will help her. Good luck. Keep posting. Other people are going thru same things you are and talking to other people surely help.

vyvanse

My son had all the symptoms your daughter did. His reading and handwriting improved immediately. The lack of appetite lasted almost a month, and he was depressed. He's been on Vyvanse for almost a year now and we're rethinking what to do. His teachers are very happy, but the depression has come back - moderately right now, but it's still unpleasant to see him like this.

where we are at

She has been on Vyvanse for almost 2.5 mo. Her handwriting has improved. She has made a jump in reading level. the loss of appetite faded after a mo. The new hurdle is whether or not to change her meds. She has been having stomach pain and vomiting this week. No fever! horrible diarehha. It isn't rotovirus she was vaccinated against it. So not sure if it was the flu or the meds calling the advice nurse tomorrow AM will post more as i know

ADD daughter

It was the flu. I am noticing amazing changes. She has always been impulsive. In parking lots she was always walking out in front of cars totally unaware of her surroundings. When on her meds she is alert totally a different child. She is also funny and playful not irritable, argumentive, and hateful like before meds. I feel like I have my daughter back. =D
