Intuniv - Night or Day?

Hello - My 9 yo son is on day 3 of 1mg/day Intuniv. Previously had been on stimulant meds over the past 3 years. The last caused a hair pulling tic which stopped when the Ritalin was stopped. The Dr indicated to give Intuniv at "bedtime" rather than the morning due to sleepiness. However he's really tired and groggy at wake up time in the morning. The Intuniv insert doesn't indicate giving in the night, but in the morning? Anyone out there doing that? If so when does the drowsiness kick in? Thanks - Marlo

Speak to your neurologist

Hi. My 5 1/2 year old is on intuniv. it is the only medicine that seems to be helping him. When we finally worked up my son to 3mg and it built up in his system (about 7 weeks later) he was so sleepy by 3pm when he got home from school, he would take naps that lasted about 4 hours! Then I got notes from the teacher that he would fall asleep during lunch. When I called the neurologist, he told me to switch to taking them at night. I noticed that the same thing was still happening.

We have decided to split the dosage. Since you can't cut the intuniv pill because you will change the rate it dissolves in the body, he gets a 1mg pill at 6:30 am and a 2mg pill at 430pm. This seems to be working much better as far as his sleepiness is concerned . I have to admit though, there was a small transition period where it seemed that in the mornings, he was a bit hyper than in the afternoon. I would say like 3 weeks. He has a para in his 12:1:1 class so they were able to bear with him through the transition.

Also, I've created a Daily report Card for the teacher to fill out for me everyday. It helps me follow up with his behaviors and his body's tolerance and acceptance to the meds.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Thanks

Thanks for the input. My son is now on week 2 of 3mg per day (so about 4 wks titrating up on Intuniv). When I give it to him at night he can't sleep well and is overly tired at school When I give it to him around 8:30am he starts wiping out and falling asleep at school. I've had to pick him up around 1-2 in the afternoon because he can't stay awake in class.! I'll call the psychiatrist and see what she suggests. I was wondering if we had to hit a plateau for the drowsiness to subside, but if your son has been on it for 7 weeks and still struggled with it then it doesn' t sound like it will.
