Intunive - When to administer - night or morning?

Hello Everyone - Long story short - my 9yo ADHD son has been on stimulants for the past 3 years. We've tried the gamut (Concerta, Focalin XR, Vyvanse, Daytrana) and we had various issues with them. For about a year we've been doing well with twice per day doses of Ritalin....then he developed a hair pulling tic. Once taken off Ritalin the tic went away so we are going to try the non-stimulant route. He's on day 3 of 1mg per day Intuniv. The Dr said to give it to him at "bedtime" due to the sedation side effect. The first night I gave it to him at 9pm and he fell asleep around 10:30pm, but he slept until 9am (he usually gets up on his own at 7am, but needs to wake up at 6am on school days). The second day gave it to him at 7:30pm - he fell asleep at 9:30pm and slept until 8:30am and then took a nap in the evening from 6-7:30pm. Last night I gave it to him at 5:30pm and he woke up at 7am this morning. The informational insert with the medicine says to give in the mornings....does anyone do this? If so when does the sleepiness kick in? If you administer at night- how soon before bedtime/wake up time do you administer?

Thanks - Marlo

Re: Intuniv - when to administer - night or morning ?

We are researching Intuniv for my teenage son but he is not yet taking it. I read a few things online that say that the sleepiness will hit at about the 17 hour mark. If this is the case, then giving it in the morning sounds best. We haven't discussed this with his doctor yet, however, so I don't know what his recommendation will be.

Transitioned Off Intuniv

Hello - Thanks for the response and I wish you luck with your son. After trying Intuniv (and varying the times of day it was administered) we opted to transition our son off of it. The sleepiness was just too overwhelming and when he wasn't sleeping the medication wasn't really helping with his focus and impulsivity. We're now in trying Straterra, but am not finding it as effective as the stimulant medication he was on previously so we are going to try to introduce that back into the regimin at a very low dose to see if it has a positive impact w/out the side effects.
