help/advice about medication

My son, almost 10, was dagnosed with ADD in the 2nd grade. We decided against medication but lately I think we need to look into it. There are many reasons why I think he might need something. He is not doing well in school , despite being vey smart. He has so much trouble focusing and staying on task , at home and school. His self esteem is very low. I'm at a loss. I'm scared of the side effects. I'm just plain scared. If anybody has any advice for me I would greatly appreciate it. The amount of information on the internet is overwhelming. I do not know anyone personally who has a child in the similiar situation.

Medication

I can't give you a lot of experience because we just got the prescription yesterday but I can tell you our thought process. We just decided to put my son on medication because it's an issue of overall quality of life. He is not producing anywhere near what his IQ would indicate he can. This frustrates his teachers and makes him wonder why other kids can do it and he can't. Outside of school he is a sweet kid but nearly impossible to motivate to do chores or anything challenging. I just got diagnosed myself and began medicine because I've gone as far as organizational strategies can take me but I still daily hit a wall of distraction. I want to run screaming out of my office most days. My self esteem suffered and I don't want my son to go through that.
