almost out of options

I am looking for help, I have ADHD and 3 of my 10 children have ADHD. My 10 year old son has been on several long acting medications and maxed out on all of them. We are now on the highest does on his current medication and it is not working. His dr says that the next step is to go to regular short acting medication taken 2 or 3 times a day. This is the way i take my meds and it works great for me, but I am worried about doing it this way for him due to his age. So far his meds work for a short time and then seem make his symptoms worse instead of better. I would really like some input on this from outside people before going to his dr AGAIN. Thanks

Been there~

Hi,

I have to tell ya ive been up down & all around frustrated trying to figure my son & exactly what his disability is, verses attitude, verses action & reaction, to medicines. Im not sure what all youve tried however I went through atleast 9 different meds i think in a 3 yr period trying each one for only a short time period, due to the affects.

Major sarcasm wheelin & dealing demands cryin & fists clenched wide awake at night & not knowing why just kinda being a shadow in the hall that was creepy. Much more

At one point I was ready to say screw u all & just home school etc well then of course life happened ( computer broke ) & three months later i was just hoping something would work cause i was already being told after two weeks of school he might not b able to go due to his inability to get with the program so to speak, without major additude lol not funny.

He is now on Concerta & uhhhh apparently it works 80% for the most part at school however by the time he gets home he's emotional & whiny & I feel like I have to baby him like he's 4 or something I dont have to do what i have to do off meds so, I dont give it to him on the weekends like they tell me to cause... its to much for an all day event lol

I do wish U much luck, dont give up, i went through almost three yrs of lack of communication with the school & all kinds of bad side affects from meds & all kinds of suspensions from 3rd to 5th grade He's still at 3rd grade level due to this crap & yea... Im just prayin it all goes up hill from here.

It feels soooo good not to hear the phone ring wondering what he said or did now in a negative way! I've been very open with him by letting him know that some things in life we have no control over however there are things that we do & its our life lesson to learn how to handle whatever life throws at us without a negative attitude

So recently, he started calling from school to let me know he's had a great day & if he continues do we get to blah blah blah lol so now i have to learn how to.... not affect his mood by denying his request I usually get off the hook by saying ill think about it but im such a straight up person that i have a hard time saying that when I know the answer is no lol

Take Care Sorry if i bored ya

Have you heard of the Feingold Program?

My family has been using the Feingold program for almost 11 years now to "treat" ADD. More information at www.feingold.org. It's basically an elimination diet - no artificial colors, flavors, preservatives or sweeteners. Yes, you can do this with 10 kids! You have to eat anyway and the amount of time you spend on food will be more than made up for with the time you don't spend dealing with the behavior problems.
