Great Place! Thanks!

I found this place while researching ADHD to help my son at home and school. He's 5 years old, and his teacher believes he's ADHD. He is being sent to an OT. It was and wasn't a surprise to me. I knew he had difficulty sitting still. He's even told me he just "...can't sit still Mommy". My family constantly berated me for his inability to sit at the dinner table during family functions. They were even unhappier about it when my solution was to allow him a quite toy he can "fiddle" with at the table. It's not as though all his attention was focusing on the toy. He answered questions when directed to him, and he ate dinner. It simply kept him in his seat. ADHD didn't cross my mind because I didn't think he was "bad", which I'm finding is a false, preconceived notion many have on ADHD.

We worked around it at home. During a book, I let him hold onto his "blankie" with a satin backing he liked to rub. During homework, I found he memorized his weekly poem better when we reviewed it while he was standing. He also concentrated on his homework better while he stood. Cleaning his room is a game called Beat the Bell, where I set the kitchen timer and he raced to do it. It is a problem at home that just... isn't. As in, it's easy for me to work around, so I chalked it up to him just being an active boy.

Anyway, I am very thankful to find this site. I'm thankful to know I'm not "crazy", and I'm not being lazy with him. He's a HAPPY boy, who isn't afraid of expressing himself when he's having trouble doing something, even something as simple as sit. And he expresses it to me AND his teachers, because he DOESN'T get berated when he can't. I've been teaching him on instinct to find another way, and after the parent teacher conference, even the teacher is starting to use some of my methods. She said that despite the 24/7 motor, he's eager to please, outgoing, popular, happy, and a pleasure to have in class. To find a website like this, telling me that what is going on in my home isn't the only place this is happening, that I'm doing alright.... Well, it's a relief.
