Daycare Expulsions

I've got a son who is almost 4 with severe ADHD. Between September 2009 and May 2010 he had been expelled from 8 different daycares. In April, the public schools in Anne Arundel County, MD developed an IEP for him, and he is currently in an ECI class. He is also on Metadate and Methylin. Our problem is he was just expelled from another daycare, one that he was in for five months. However, the daycare has never provided any written documentation for his inappropriate behaviors, and we have county therapists working at the daycare with him to provide behavioral plans. We also work extensively with Kennedy Krieger. My question is, what rights do we have to fight back? He has an IEP, and there has never been anything in writing to account for the actions that he gets kicked out for. We've gone through every daycare in the area, and I'm out of options. I'm in the military and will be in the area for the next 8-9 months. Thoughts or ideas would be appreciated...

daycare

My son also has ADHD and is 8. He currently is not allowed to go to after school care because he has to temporarily be off medication. I work for a daycare and i don't know if the ones you've been too are part of NAEYC (http://www.naeyc.org), but ones that are a part of it tend to have more understanding staff. It also helps to talk to the center and work out how to handle your son when he is in a rough place. I just know that is how we do it here and we have kids with autism, ODD, ADHD.

It's tough, I so understand.

I understand this one way too well

I understand this one way too well. My son is 11 and was diagnosed with ADHD in 1st grade. He, too, has been expelled from numerous daycares and never for anything of any significance other than inexperienced "educators" that do not know how to properly redirect a child with ADHD. They feel it's easier to tell us to leave than to find a plan of action to help him. Our best solution - the local karate school offers an afterschool program! It has been great for his self-esteem and the discipline and solid routine has been wonderful. It's amazing that they have ZERO problems with him. It's all about proper supervision! Check out your local martial arts possibilities. They pick my son up from school, work with him on his homework and he gets the added benefit of the karate program itself!

Extra Activities

I appreciate the suggestion of karate, unfortunately my son is also a Hemophiliac and his doctors won't approve him to do any sports like that. Being in the military, I try to enroll him in sports, but the only one they allow for him is swimming, and he's too young to join a swim team...

day care

I sympathize. When my daughter was 3 I was told by a daycare that she "was the worst child they had ever seen". My suggestion is to consult with the county services what daycares they've encountered that are most appropriate. A private daycare can pretty much accept who they want and expel who they don't want (i.e. children who require more effort). A highly rated daycare with trained staff should be willing to work with your child especially since you have county services (and btw, you may be eligible for more services like wrap around). Keep demanding, keep documenting; in your area look for a support group of similar parents who may know of special classes, and various other special local services - good luck.

RE: Daycare Expulsions

Send him to a school that are specifically made for kids with this type of problems. There are Day schools that caters to your needs. They are using a variety of activities instead of bookwork to teach, and interspersing periods of physical activity, an controlling energy levels through strategic nutritional approaches, these schools manage to help ADD kids succeed academically. There staff is also well-equipped to cater to problem when it does arises. :)
