Hello all,

This is my first post and I’m glad to have found this forum…

I’d like to give a little history of my situation and perhaps the members could point me in the right direction…

I’ve recently been diagnosed with ADD. The doctor administered a series of neuro-physc tests and the results were pretty conclusive. This came as no surprise to me but I’m still somewhat disturbed by the diagnosis. My whole life long struggle has been playing over and over in my mind…

I am now at the point were I want to start looking for treatment options but I’ve got other issues that may present problems. I am a recovering alcoholic and have been sober for about 18 months now. I’ve also been seeing a therapist and have been taking 200 mg of Zoloft a day for depression. My current psychiatrist does not want to prescribe medications for my ADD due to my history of alcohol abuse.

I am now 36 years old and have been battling whole life and now that I’ve found out what the problem is I fell like I’m not eligible for the solution.

I’m feeling pretty hopeless…

I would not recommend medication

Talk to your doctor about a non-stimulant medication for ADD/ADHD. Some people take these drugs recreationally and there is a high potential for abuse. That's why it's a schedule 2 drug, right alongside cocaine. With your history, I would strongly recommend you don't risk it. And honestly, I think starting medication has made things worse for me. I would suggest finding a good psychiatrist to find the right medication or combination of medications without the use of stimulants. Also, find a good psychologist and/or AD(H)D coach and start building a plan to manage/overcome the symptoms.
