Stressful Transition to Middle School
My son was diagnosed ADHD in 3rd grade. We've gone through a couple of doctors and medications and he was successful enough in elementary school. But now he's 11 and started 6th grade in September and the real school work and responsibilities have kicked in. Now his real issues with ADD have come out. He's on Vyvanse 40mg and is irritable most of the time (dose too low? too high? try a different med? here we go again...). His state test scores for 5th grade also went down in ELA and it has become apparent that while he is bright and does well in math and anything that doesn't require sustained writing with details (like multiple choice questions or one-word answers), it is anything requiring sustained writing (book reports, essay question on tests) that he can't handle. He NEVER writes his assignments in his planner, luckily the school website has his daily homework listed but this won't be the case in high school. He is in a remedial class for writing, but so far I don't see any improvement. And his irritability leaves me exhausted. Any advice? Going back to the neurologist next week.
