Is anyone out there??

My five year old daughter was diagnosed with ADHD over a year ago. She has been on two types of Ritilan. Nothing seems to help. I am a single mom and I have a two year old as well. I am working two jobs and doing my best to get Maddie on the right track, but it seems like a losing battle sometimes. Everything is a daily fight, from getting out of bed to going to bed. I really just want someone to talk to. Maybe someone who's going through the same thing. I try talking to my friends, but mostly they don't understand.

You are not alone

I have a child with adhd and I tried different meds and didnt like the effect. I have her trying neurofeedback and I have noticed a difference about 40%. I have her school working with her also. Maybe you can discuss this with her school or doctor and look into alternative therapies. It does get better!!!

My son was diagnosed at the same age as your daughter. He is 9 now and his behavior has improved but we still have a long way to go. He has been on several medications over the years. He is taking Metadate for hyperactivity and focus and it has been two years.

Light at the End of the Tunnel

I have raised 2 special needs children and I just want you to know that there is light at the end of the tunnel. My daughter who is now 33 yo was diagnosed with ADHD (with hyperactivity) in 1st or 2nd grade. At that time the only med available was Ritalin. My daughter who was very bright but very disorganized and struggled all the way through high school. I fought with the schools/teachers the entire way, changed doctors (didn't believe add existed or children outgrow it),served as advocate, cheerlead, etc, but I never gave up. It was very difficult watching my daughter struggle with her self esteem (she thought she was stupid), struggled with relationships (she was the only girl in her class not invited to a classmates birthday party and the invitations were passed out in class, harassed in high school), struggled with teachers who didn't understand/didn't care/didn't believe, wouldn't/didn't follow the IEP(she once was told she was just a spoiled brat),etc; however, I am proud to say that my daughter has grown up to be a fine young woman. She put herself through a private college and then through a private graduate school where she graduated with a MBA with honors. She is now gainfully employed and surrounded by incredibly loyal friends.

So, I just want you to know that things will get better. One of the most helpful things was a book a psychologist recomended called SOS for Parents which is still in print and can be found online. I also spent a lot of money on therapy which at the time was not covered by insurance-and it was money well spent. However, if you go to a public school, the school is now required by Federal law to provide whatever a child needs to learn, including counselling. I cannot remember if this is covered by ADA or IDEA,. Your local mental health center would be able to answer that question or you can find it on the internet.

Good luck and God Bless. Rita

You are not alone fighting mommy.

I have two boys aged 12 and 14 and the past 2 weeks with my boys have been horrible. My oldest is ADD and in grade 9. All we did was fight, say angry words and I ended up in tears, and horribly frustrated. I came to this site so that I could find some support. After reading many of the blogs I know that we are not alone. There are no easy answers except to take things one hour at a time and breath. Hang in there fighting mom! Quote:

Thank you!

Thank you so much for your post. I really needed to see this. I feel so hopeless right now. I have been my son's biggest advocate only to be hurt so deeply by him. My son is 14 years old and I am not liking him very much right now. I need to have hope and your post gave me that. Quote:
