Adult ADD medication suggestions?

Hi, I was diagnosed with ADD in the 6th grade, and tried out a number of meds before settling on Pemoline in about the 8th grade. That worked great for the next 20+ years, but I discovered while I was off of it during my pregnancy and subsequent breastfeeding time that the FDA had pulled approval. So, I had to go back to the drawing board. I tried Adderall, but it made me feel too jumpy, and now I've been on Concerta for a couple of years. I'm not completely happy with it, though. I think it makes me a little more impatient and perhaps a little angry. I also hate all the hoops I have to jump through every month to get a new prescription. ( I also tried Strattera for a short period, but it gave me a horrible dry mouth/throat.) Does anyone have any suggestions for anything else to try?

Medicine suggestions

Hello McClure77. I`m a man from North Norway. I`m born in 1979 and currently using 30mg ritalin capsules modified release. I got the ADD diagnosis in may 2006. The first med i started with was ritaline tablets, every 3-4 hours but that made med have alot of up and downs every day. And i always had to keep a eye on the time. Was pretty exhausting. I`ve tried Strattera and Concerta but those wasnt the right meds for me. Strattera diddn`t work as expected, i started feeling sick a few days after i started using it. So i had to stop, in agreement with my doctor. Concerta i worked on that for a year, but i then in the end i had a bad depression it improved when i stopped using it. I had to reduce the dosage step by step, but me and others i have talked with had a bad experience with it. The medication im on now ritalin capsules modified release is the right one for me. And ive used it for about 2 years now. The capsule lasts between 6-9 hours, but that depends from person to person. In my case 6 hours, after those six hours its enough to supplement with 2,5mg ritalin tablets every 3-4 hours. It have worked and still works for me, and its the only thing that have worked for me so far. I have actually finished two exams in dog training training as a instructor and i can thank the medication for my concentration to get thru it. Now the only thing i need now is a dog. But the medication, i have tried a few. Before the diagnosis i even used anti depressants, but they made me feel emotionless and it felt diddnt get happy or sad. Ritalin made my emotions feel normal, and i could start to understand the emotions of myself and others. But medication is something we try, i used a long time to find the right combination, I hope you find the right medicine for you. Many doctors i`ve meet they are hesitant to prescribe central stimulating meds, but usually when they see the difference they finally understand.

God Luck to you :)

Hi McClure77,

I have been using Adderall Xr and Adderall regular as a step down. I found that the jumpy issue affected me as well. To eliminate this, I use a high dose B 12 as a chaser. The original 5 hour energy drinks have a high dose of B 12 and Taurine (amino acid), it will take the edge off and reduce rebound substantially.

My Current Med Regimen

I have tried just about EVERY single medication for ADHD. I really think it is dependent on your situation and that can change over time. Meds have worked for me for a while and then they will become less effective. Currently, I am trying Vyvanse for my ADD. I have to take high doses of meds b/c I metabolize things very quickly, so I am taking 120 mg of Vyvanse three times a day (at 9 am, 1 pm, and 5pm) and it lasts until about 9 pm, when I would completely CRASH and feel horrible. So now I am taking a small dose of Dexedrine Spansules (45 mg) about half an hour before the crash and it helps me come much more slowly and I do not have that crash feeling. Also this regimen doesn't change my sleep patterns. I take a benzo to sleep, but the Vyvanse interferes with my sleep less than other medications, like Adderall. I am a dual-diagnosis too (ADHD/PTSD/depression) so I take some meds that help with my ADHD that are not stimulants--Wellbutrin XL and Cymbalta. Don't think I have ever heard of anyone else using Cymbalta for ADHD, but it really made a difference in my depression and concentration when I started taking it.

My advice: Get a good Psychiatrist--one you trust and can be honest with--and you will be able to work with her to get you on the right medication(s).

I'm curious about your chaser approach. When you say chase, do you mean immediately with your Adderall or sometime after as it's wearing off? I recently started a new treatment with Provigil, which makes me a bit jumpy too, so I can't imagine adding other stimulants at the same time (i.e., I've switched to decaf for my morning coffee). But before Provigil, I liked the 5-hr drinks as a late afternoon pick-me-up without side effects. Perhaps I can restore it to my day when needed.

Meds

Thanks guys. Yes it seems like there is something for everyone, and it depends on everyone's varying symptoms.

I'll continue to investigate!
