newly diagnosed 4 yr old

Hi- I have known for sometime but just had my child evaluated. We have not started meds- I am currently seeking support- and some kind of behavior therapy- or skill training for myself and my spouse. I have been unable to find a CHADD group in my area. My child has also started some strange behavior that will not stop no MATTER what we say. He talks about "pee-wee or weiner dogs" or just "weiner" and now he has also started pressing "himself" onto things- in PUBLIC. hE HAS HAD ISSUES WITH SENSORY, he used to press his nose on my arm. which was very weird - but far easier to deal with than this new behavior.

Of course I am now worrying about OCD He has definite ADHD impulsivity issues. I am dealing the best I can- and reading everything I can- but I am getting worried and restless.

Double Check the diagnosis

I would get the diagnosis double-checked by another doctor, and mention some of the strange behavior your child is displaying. The reason I say this is because the symptoms of ADD are very, very similar to other disorders especially at that age. It might still turn out to be ADD, but there might also be a secondary disorder that's combining with it and that also needs to be worked on. The difficulties getting him to use the right word for certain things and his habit of pressing himself against stuff, along with the sensory issues sounds like it could be combined ADD/OCD or Asperger's Syndrome/high-functioning Autism, both of which are very easily confused with ADHD at that age.

I'm not trying to scare you or anything, because if you get the right diagnosis nice and early it shouldn't be too much of an issue down the road. I have a lot of friends who are somewhere on the Autism spectrum, and they've mentioned having similar weird behaviors as kids.

Just something to check out. It might also help if you get your child re evaluated every year or so, because the doctors might catch something that they didn't notice the year before.

Hope this helps!
