Studies of long term affects taking ADHD medications from childhood to adult?

i've read everywhere that adhd medication nowadays is very safe, but still with side effects. however, i have yet to read the long term effects of these safe meds as the children who take them transition into adults (20-30's). does anyone has research stats on this?

Been awhile

I have not seen any specific studies in a while.

In general, there has been no harm shown. There was a concern about the stimulants stunting growth, but research over time showed that medication "vacations" through-out the year prevented this from happening.

I know that some folks were asserting that the medication increased the likelihood of addiction. However, the increase likelihood of addiction is seen in any diagnosis of ADHD - whether meds are used or not.

I think some folks were trying to show that addiction may increase due to the lack of medication. Their assertion was that illicit use was the result of an unmet need and, thus, self-medication.

However, I don't think they got anything conclusive.

Oh the important ones...

The most important research - outcomes. A mixed approach - meds - when necessary, education, behavioral, and therapeutic interventions show the best outcomes when compared to any one modality by itself.
