Caffeine pills doing the work with less harm.....

Hi everyone...

I wanted to share something that is working for us. My daughter is now 9. At the age of 6 she was put on Vyvanse after not being able to tolerate Ritalin or Adderall. She was on Vyvanse for 3 years with summer breaks. Last year, I requested an EKG. The doctor told me it wasn't necessary but I insisted we have it done. She has never had an EKG prior to starting meds. The EKG revealed a heart problem called long qt. I was advised to keep her on her meds since she was responding so well to it at school. During the summer break. I took her off her meds and went back for another EKG. Her heart was completely normal while not on the meds. Her doctors, including a heart specialist, told me it would be safe to put her back on her medicine but I opted to try other things first. I tried Feingold diet as well as natural alternatives to ADHD called Synaptol, Omega's, and calcium support. While her behavior improved some, her grades sunk. As her grades went down to F's, behavior issues came out. The school had a conference with me and told me she is failing and needs help. Desperate to give her the help she needs without hurting her health, I turned to caffeine pills, with no food colorings. I bought a generic bottle, each capsule is 200 mg. I cut it in half and gave her the half before school began. Within a week, the teachers were singing praises, within two weeks, her tests scores are up again and the teachers are amazed. So am I. My daughter only get's the half caffeine pill before school. Not on weekends or days off. It's been three weeks so far. She came off her the Feingold diet and with the caffeine pill, everything is going great. I do keep sugars low but have added back in all the other food. She is happier and calmer now. This treatment has worked for us. My daughter has been off the caffeine pills for 4 days (long weekend) and does not complain of headaches. So far, so good and without the hefty side effects she had before.

I thought of trying this

I was afraid it might have the opposit effect and make the child crazy/hyper. I do know that his brain works in a very similar way to mine and when I take amphetimines I am a nut, but a Monster Energy and I can focus like a lazer. I think may just try this. Possibly 1/4 pill to start. What about later in the day?

Caffeine pills doing the work with less harm.....

Start with a glass of coke cola. See if that makes him calmer or more hyper.

It made my daughter calmer within 30 minutes.

caffeine for children

I also tried caffeine. My 7 yearold granddaughter was recently diagnosed with ADHD,being concerned with the side effects of medications,I tried a cup of ice tea, within 30 minutes there was no fidgeting during the school work, she could actually focus on the "non-preferred tasks". I couldn't believe it, but her Mom ,who I believe also has ADHD,but sadly was never diagnosed, has always said that tea and coffee calms her, it she drinks too much she will actually fall asleep. What ever will the drug companies do if caffeine is the answer??

caffine pills doing the work

I would say to try caffine in soda first.. She if it calms her down.

For my daughter, the caffine worked for a while, especially when she was young, but now that she is 10 and in 5th grade, she needs more. She is currently on Intuniv. We are on the fifth week and just seeing improvements.

Caffine with Intuniv does not work. It makes the medicine less effective.

Hmmm...interesting...

I would never advise self medicating at home...but allow me to contradict myself. :) Before I was diagnosed with ADD, I noticed that I, too, was calmer and much more focused after a cup of coffee. It always had the opposite effect on me as it did my adult peers at work...it woke them up...and it helped me to settle down. Go figure. I could almost see an immediate improvement in symptoms, but the drawback was the fact that I developed a caffeine addiction...which over time, can increase blood pressure and heart rate as well. Caffeine withdrawals cause headache too...shrugs....i guess everyone's mileage varies. :)
