Ritalin & Adderall

Over the past year, I have done the grand tour of ADHD medications (Ritalin, Concerta, Adderall, Straterra) with mixed, mostly unsuccessful effects. The only thing that was even half way effective was Ritalin, so I asked my doctor to put me back on it (Ritalin SR, 20mg X 2 per day). One morning, I goofed and grabbed one of the old Adderall XR 30mg pills by mistake and rather than loose the day, took just one of the Ritalin with it.

The effect was just about perfect. Great focus, lots of energy, can now complete tasks, no side effects. I tried it again the following day, same thing. Neither drug by itself had been as effective as what this was. I asked my doctor if there was a problem taking 1/2 doses of each one together and he said it should be OK - just watch for side effects.

I continued and I am now on prescriptions for both Adderall XR 15mg and Ritalin SR 20mg once each morning. It has been about 3 weeks and my results continue to be excellent.

What I would like to know is if anyone else has any experience with this combination or any advice to offer. I would especially like to know if this is a known combination or if there have been any studies done on Adderall + Ritalin.

Take care and thank you.

how you felt

I have been on the same "tour" but so far no luck. I keep wondering what I am supposed to feel like if it's working. How will I know???

ADHD symptoms improve

Stephanie,

Your ADD/ADHD symptoms will improve if your medication is of benefit to you. According to Dr. Larry Silver, "Ideally the medication will minimize or control all aspects of the hyperactivity, distractibility, and impulsivity." If it is not, or you are uncertain it's working, it's time to revisit your prescribing physician.
