Think son has more than just ADD...need advice!

Hi there, My 7 year old son was just diagnosed by his pediatrician as having ADD (inattentive type). We've been struggling with this disorder for years and have finally medicated him. His focus has increased tremendously, but he still is having issues retaining information, passing tests and writing. I suspect he has another disability along with the ADD. I really need to have him evaluated for learning disabilities in general but don't know how to request it. If I request a general evaluation does the school district automatically test him for a large variety of disabilities or do I have to request specific tests and explain why I want them done. If anyone has a sample letter for requesting evaluations for these types of problems I would REALLY appreciate them sharing it with me. I need to get him an IEP as soon as possible since he is failing almost all subjects at this point and the school isn't offering any interventions. We're in California if that helps. Thanks! Heidi

start here

Here's a step-by-step guide to securing accommodations in school for your child: http://www.additudemag.com/adhd/article/899.html. Be sure to make all requests in writing. The best way to start is to meet with the teacher to come up with solutions right now, then send a formal written request for evaluation to the school principal. With your written request, they are required by federal law to evaluate your child (as long as you're in public school).

Focus on presenting issues that diagnoses...

In general, when talking to an assessor, discuss presenting problems not what you think is wrong.

When you say... "I think he has ADHD, or Dx" it may bias the assessors, and they may not be as thorough.

I think that Consumer Reports did a study on car mechanics. When subjects told the mechanic, "I think the transmission is shot." there were more tranny overhauls than when they said, "I have a problem when I shift."

Same idea...
