Lost in the criminal justice system

Our story is years long and very painful. Six years ago a family member was truant and self medicating. He was suffering school and social failure. He was grabbed up by JJ and there has been nothing but punishment since. They don't believe in the diagnosis and they were able to make it a probation rule that meds for depression and ADHD NOT be allowed. They said he was "looking for drugs." He was kept from all treatment. At age 22 (tomorrow,) he finds himeself in jail for self medicating. He was recently evaluated AGAIN in jail and the diagnosis was upheld. Long story short; he's not allowed meds for ADHD and has been sitting there awaiting sentencing since Feb. I'm SO WORRIED about the state of his mental health. He has (diagnosed) anxiety, severe stress, ADHD combined and academic /social failure. I took him out of the picture and asked a general ques "What medications do you usually give inmates who have been diagnosed with ADHD?" Here is part of the email I received today. I NEED comments, please.

"Usually in the prisons they do not treat ADHD because the medications are controlled meds. and most are stimulants which they do not allow. They also view ADHD as an illness that affects ability to learn and the ability to work which is not an issue while in prison. In extreme cases when it is treated, they can use wellbutrin, "

Counsel

Sounds like good counseling would help. They offer all types of volunteer chaplains and people who will listen and advise. Writing is a good outlet too. ADHD would probably not be treated in itself, unless it becomes depression or bipolar.

Lost in the criminal justice system

Hi: Thanks for the reply. bp depression w/o psychosis is also a diagnosis....he's been known to suffer since grade four (when he began to really fall behind and lose friends.) SPECT scans confirm long-term suffering. The justice system calls it all (an excuse to get drugs.) They've known this in the system for years but won't accept any of it. They knew he had an IEP re ADHD six years ago, yet put him in a reality-based behavior program to make him responsible for his bad decisions. In six years he didn't have one second of support for his needs. He has high ability..........and an eighth grade education. This is why I want to find a way to make the system accountable for educating themselves re these disorders. (you should read accounts of what our school district has done to asperger students...nothing protects them from the school to jj pipeline.) Bad to worse (deliberate) mishandling. Three professionals wrote that incarceration (and lack of treatment) is/has been causing more damage. (to no avail.)

common Problem

This is happening over and over for individuals with diagnosis like ADHD, ADD, Bipolar, Etc. the criminal and mental health systems need to be in communication and yet even the various departments of these systems are not. It is the most frustrating aspect to me of this disorder. It seems to be easier to lock them away rather than provide the support or help they need to realize their potential. Unfortunately it does not help when those with the diagnosis are in denial and unconsciously aid those who are not trying to help them rather than work as part of a team with those who are.

Lost...

I can feel your pain and despair, I will pray for you and your son. I hope he is able to get the treatment he deserves, he doesn't sound like a criminal, just another lost soul with untreated mental and emotional issues. Don't give up! :-) Just be there for him. Lisahk
