First steps to find out
Hi all,
I'll try to keep this short so as to not take up too much of your attention ;)
On a whim I picked up Michael Sandler's book College Confidence with ADD (I had been searching for another book), and before I knew it 2 hours had passed and I had skim-read the entire book, and was "fascinated" by some of the stuff he described in his book.
I'm no psychologist by any means and I'll probably be the last person to admit it to myself, but I've always held a very sneaking suspicions that I've had problems/disorders with attentiveness, focus, time management, and organization. I did well enough in high school (high GPA and 1560 on my SAT), but somewhere along in college something fell by the wayside. I did finally graduate with a BS in Engineering, no less, but my marks weren't so high to be outstanding. Now that I've graduated I'm trying to find and figure out exactly where I could have improved and fix it.
Coming from a relatively "conventional", hard-working family (Chinese-born parents), I think my parents never really bought into the idea of "disorders" or whatnot, and the usual answer to a typical situation was either "work harder" (easy enough to convey) or "work smarter" (but never really how to implement it). However, we all know that work and productivity are way more complicated and multi-faceted than this.
I'm very new to this still, and I'm not looking for an excuse or "way out" so as to justify my behavior or past actions, but it would at least be refreshing to know whether this is a significant problem that affects my life or just something else (even "just an excuse" is an answer, and was wondering what kind of "first steps" I should take to get there. Are there any "accurate" tests (online or otherwise) to take for an initial first impression/diagnosis, so to speak? Set an appointment with the local doctor? Find a local support group?
Thanks.
