Play Attention
My daughter used Play Attention for nearly 2 yrs--3x a week the 1st yr and 2x a week the 2nd. She progressed up to the Intermediate level on all games then to Advanced level on many of them. She never did achieve quite the consistency of high scores that they advise, before moving up to the next level, but they told me to advance her anyway rather than waiting for the 5x-in-a-row +80% scores advised (she'd achieve it maybe 3x in a row, once or twice maybe 4x,, but then revert to a lower score). I do think it helped her, as did the Interactive Metronome and other alternatives we'd previously tried. She became accustomed to focusing and what it felt like--the goal of PA, and has shown she's able to do so WHEN SHE WANTS TO. However, internal motivation to focus when it's more relaxing/fun/enjoyable for her to simply space out, chat with friends in class, let more entertaining, trivial thoughts whirl around in her head, etc., is something the program could not provide. I think she did well with PA because she experienced immediate feedback about how well she was doing,--even the Academic Bridge component, when she did schoolwork and couldn't see the screen--let her know right after the "game" was over, how well she'd done. She doesn't get the same continuous or immediate feedback from studying, taking tests or finishing a "boring" task. So I've been disapointed with the carry-over from progess on PA to progress with academics and life skills. Also, the PA "games" do not last as long as a typical study or test-taking session, or the time period necessary to do a good job completing an adult or adolescent-level multi-step task. Still, I feel the investment in time and money was worth it, and was one of the factors--along with some gains in maturity, nutritional supplements, physical activities, alternative school choices, the Supercamp program last summer, etc. that have helped minimize the negative effects of her ADHD.
