What kind of doctor?

We started off seeing a developmental pediatrician, who has been prescribing the medications. Our son has had to go through multiple meds, which we are still working on; he has had side effects with stimulants, specifically tics, which has limited the meds, though the stimulants are effective. We have some issues with behavior at home, and she recommended having our son see a psychologist as well. In some respects, we feel like we need a different type of dr managing the meds, because of all the issues we have had, but are uncertain where to turn - child psychiatrist? (most dont even take insurance), pediatric neurologist? stay with developmental pediatrician?

Asking for advice on what kind of drs people have their kids see - thanks!

Unfortunately, it is common to have to try many different medications and dosages for some children to find an ADD/ADHD medication that is effective for an individual. My 7yo son has been through many, many medication adjustments over the last 2 years and we are still tweaking.

As for the type of professional to see for ADD/ADHD treatment, there are many options. Here's a comprehensive list of these options from ADDitude: http://www.additudemag.com/adhd-web/article/565.html. We started out seeing a developmental/behavioral specialist because it was the only thing covered by our insurance at the time. But I was unhappy with the level of care we were receiving. We were able to gain insurance coverage for mental health care and switched to a mental health practice for care because they were much more accessible and because counseling and behavior modification is so important. We see a social worker for counseling (which I wouldn't have known was an option) and the pediatrician they have on staff for medications and physical wellbeing. It is working well for us.

My 2 cents...

1 - It is more about the person than the letter's after the name. There are some superstars and freaks in all of the professions. All else being equal, my bias is with a neuropsychologist with school/educational experience.

#2 - Be practical. Start with your insurance provider and figure out your coverage, what they will pay, and who they will pay for...
