Got Kicked out Of School, They Think I'm a Junkie for Wanting Adderall

I'm one of those po' people with no health insurence, so I've not taken medication or gotten treatment for my ADHD in 4 years.

Shortly after school started in May I only called my school's Counseling Center to see about therapy and medication they referred me to the school's Health & Wellness Center. The H&WC referred me back to the Conseling Center. When I told them that the Counseling Center told me to call them they referred me to a local mental health clinic and I made an appointment there.

I made an appointment at the H&WC to get birth control because I stopped getting regular periods. If you don't know how birth control pills work (and you'd be surpised at how many people don't) there's 3 weeks of birth control pills and one of sugar pills and during the sugar pill week a woman gets her period.

I got mine the second week of the regular pills and I not only bled, but I bled to the point I it was like I was hemmoraging. If I had had sex recently then I'd of thought I was having a miscarriage.

I also had terrible headaches, was depressed, fatigued, and very, very nauteous.

I woke up one day in a pool of my own blood (and yes, I am aware of how nasty that sounds-it happening was far worse. I can show you the blood stain on my floor.) and I got so freaked out I called the health center. They never called back so I called again a few days later. Then the next week which they were closed. Finally I got them on the phone and I was still very sick and was crying when they called and after making the appointment I just hung up and went back to bed.

So I went to my appointment and and the first lady I saw was very nice. Then the nurse practioner walked in. The moment that she came in to the room she told me that the health center was refusing me services. She said that they were "too busy" to see me. I found that extremely odd as I had been the only person in the waiting room that day. I balked and told her that because I am a student they have to see me. She the claimed that I didn't qualify for services because I wasn't taking summer classes when I pointed out that I am she said; "this isn't the first time that you were rude to me. You were rude on the phone."

I pointed out that I told her that I was sick and that she was wasting my cell phone time as I use a prepaid cell phone by talking after I'd made my appointment. She told me that she "didn't hear" me and said they would give me more birth control pills if I went to the Conseling Center. I refused as one thing has nothing to do with the other. She said if I didn't they wouldn't give me he birth control pills nor see me again. I walked out crying.

I made an appointment to speak to someone in Judicial Affairs the next day. I go to my appointment and learn the nurse filed a complaint about me.

According to the nurse practitioner's complaint, which makes no mention of birth control pills, I did nothing but rant and rave and demand a prescription for Adderall and became "belligerent" when they told me to call a local mental health clinic instead. Reading between the lines she implied that I am a junkie for wanting medication to treat my ADHD spite of the fact that I have a documented diagnosis of ADHD and was prescribed medication for it in the past.

In the past my Adderall had been prescribed to only by psychiatrists and other people in the mental health field as it is a medication for something considered to be a psychiatric disorder.

I also, had made an appointment at the local mental health clinic, specifically to get a prescription of Adderall, WEEKS prior to that appointment, so I did not even need the school's Health and Wellness Center to get it and it makes no sense that I would get "belligerent" when told to do so!

Also, not 2 weeks after this, I slipped and fell head first on my floor. I got a terrible headache that did not go away. I was afraid that I had damaged my brain, so because I have no health insurance and am barred from the school's Health and Wellness Center I went to the ER. I was diagnosed with a severe tension headache, due not to my fall, but stress.

The ER doctor wrote me a prescription for 2 different painkillers. I never even got those prescriptions filled. I still have the scripts nearly a month later. Since it was just a headache and not brain damage, I chose to take Tylenol instead. I do not like to take strong medication because it takes a toll on my body and has the potential be dangerous. I have those scripts still! If I were a junkie, wouldn't I of gotten those filled?

When I had informal hearing about what happened with Judicial Affairs, the woman there mentioned something about how I had "come from out of state and asking for medication" but did not elaborate further. She also made a comment about the way I had been dressed at my appointment. I had been wearing a pair of old black sweatpants and a black t-shirt.

I typically do not wear all-black clothing because I am a redhead and have the pale skin tone to match so it makes me look washed-out, but having stained several items of clothing due to my excessive bleeding I think my choice in wardrobe made perfect sense!

Also, the nurse is so vague, she specifies NO ACTUAL behavior on my part. Like she said I was "belligerent" but she never specifies what it is I supposedly did.

Despite her claims of my acting oh-so badly, she failed to alert camps police.

In fact while writing an appeal of my suspension I had to refer to the letter that Judicial Affairs sent me regarding her complaint. Since it is full of lies it makes me very angry and when I am angry I cry. I don't own a printer so I was typing it out in the library. Campus police were called just because I was crying, so I find it EXTREMELY difficult to believe that if I was misbehaving as much as that nurse claims that she would not call campus police.

financial assistance

I am sorry to hear you are struggling so much right now. There should be other opportunities for medical care outside of the college campus. In his article, "How to Finance Treatment for ADD/ADHD," (http://www.additudemag.com/adhd-web/article/844.html) Dr. Peter Jensen suggests contacting http://helapingpatients.org for prescription assistance.

Hang in there and good luck!

if you have documentation

If you have documentation of ADHD have a copy and show the school personnel. I would aslo call the state and have that clinic looked at. NO ED in this country is allowed to turn a patient away; but they don't have to give you medication that just FYI. It sound like the practioner doesn't understand what her job is . She needs to be a instructor as well as health practioner and if you don't understand something just ask. Document everything you do. Who you spoke to date and time it. You will have to be organized. If you are drug seaking the behavior will become evident and then they will have it documented as well. Good luck. What state did this happen in?? (Judi)
