ADHD Violent Tantrums

Just had a question for you all. My son is 6 and taking 15mg of Focalin XR. The dose has obviously become too little for him as it is wearing off in 5 or 6 hours. School has only been back in for 3 weeks or so and I have had to be called to the school 4 times now because my son is having voilent tantrums, kicking, hitting, head butting, scratching etc. He is the sweetest child you have ever met. So loveable and a joy to be around. He is having these tantrums when they ask him to do something that he doesnt want to do i.e. - go to after school program, PE, music. The principle had pretty much made me aware that my child is spoiled which BTW i TOTALLY agree with. We have a Dr appointment tomorrow to re evaluate his medication and hopefully put him on something totally different. I HATE giving my child medication, Just like I am sure most of us parents do, but if we keep it up at this pace he will be kicked out of school in the 1st grade. I am not by any means blaming the tantrums on the medication or the lact of the medication working, just wondering if there are any other parents who have experienced anything like this? Also I'd like to hear what medications have worked best for your children. He focalin XR has worked great in the past, other than making him extremely shy and isolate around new people. I was told that he might need an antidepressant as well as a different ADHD medication. Someone please help me. I am extremely concerned for my childs well being, and do not want him to end up in some alternative school at 6 years old.

try different med with change in response to behavior

My son was having similar problems with the tantrums, except his was at home with us. We had him on Focalin XR. It worked for a little while, but then things got worse. We ended up putting him on Vivayance in the morning and Intuniv at night to help him sleep better. This was a major difference in behavior. We discovered that the " tantrums" were more of an inability to process doing right from wrong. This allows him the ability to process. The tantrums did not go away over night, but the maturity level has increased. Sometimes it takes him time, but he eventually makes good choices with his behavior. He used to have tantrums daily, most of the time more than one a day. Now it is maybe 1 a month at most. The arguing is also part of the problem. We have decided not to participate when this happens. It is hard, but letting him calm himself and saying " I am not talking to you until you control your body" was the big change factor. At first the tantrums would go on 45 min. Now they end in about 5 min.

Thank You

Hey, thanks for your reply. We took my son to the doctor on Friday and they also changed his medication to Vyvanse 20mg. We havent had any tantrums so far, but I still see him getting frustrated. I can already see, after 3 days ,. the difference BUT I can also see that the medication is not enough. He was up to 20mg of Focalin XR and is now taking the lowest dose (20 mg) of Vyvanse. I think that 1 step up with the dose will be just the change we are looking for! So far Vyvanse has been wonderful for my husband. So we are looking forward to new beginnings with our son. Thanks for the information. I hope that the medication continues to work for you.
