ADHD/Insomnia

Thanks for the website. I don't read a lot about people who have problems with their adhd child having insomnia. My son is 8 and consistently has insomnia. He is on 36 mg. of concerta in the morning and takes a 10mg ritilin booster at 3:00pm. It should be worn off by bedtime. In the summer we only gave him the booster if he needed it or we were going somewhere he would have to sit for long periods of time. For school we have them give it to him at 3 so it will wear off but whether he takes it or not he has insomnia a lot. The doctor said I could give him benedryl to counteract the medication but I don't want to do that all the time. We use that for when it is 1:00am and he has to sleep because he has school in the morning. Does anyone have any other ideas on what to do? He struggles with dyslexia, and I notice a lot of anxiety issues so that could be a problem too. I don't get on here tons and really could use some ideas. Feel free to e-mail me at kathleengalloway@sbcglobal.net (put adhd in subject bar). I am in Michigan.

sleep and ADHD

Issues with getting enough sleep are actually common among children with ADD/ADHD. Here's an article with 18 parent-tested sleep remedies for ADHD kids who struggle with getting enough sleep: http://www.additudemag.com/adhd/article/7547.html. Talk to your child's physician as well. If they take a stimulant medication, it may need to be adjusted so it isn't preventing sleep. There are also supplements and medications available to help with this issue.

re: insomnia

We give our 10 y.o. daughter 1.5 mg of melatonin. It works great.
