could I have ADD? PLEASE READ!

I'm 17 yr old. Junior in high school.

In elementary school until 6th grade I was a very good student. School was interesting to me and I wanted to learn. It was all very easy and I was good at it. Although I've always had trouble getting work done during class due to distractions from everyone around and I would day dream a lot. As I've gotten older school has just gotten harder and harder and it has gotten harder to concentrate in school. I am almost constantly distracted and procrastinate doing homework. I often forget assignments for the day and end up not getting them turned in on time. I day dream all the time and have a hard time focusing on homework in class. This all really upsets me because I want to do good in school, I just can't. Here's a little story. One day in geometry we had a paper due at the end of class. About 30 problems or so. I started working on it but then got distracted by the janitor mowing outside. Next thing I know it's the end of clas, I have 3 problems done and was absolutely screwed and had to cheat to finish. My mom would probably get me tested, but she found out I was buying other kids ADD medicine who didn't want to take it so I could focus. I know it's wrong, and I don't do it anymore. I really dont care what they would give me I just really want to be able to focus during school and everything else. I'm not very hyper, I have my days, but for the most part I just completely space intermittently during class while the teacher is talking or doing homework.

Well, well!

Are you ADD? Sounds like you could very well be the inattentive type of ADD. You do need to go in and get an assessment with a professional AND you need to stop trying to self-medicate by yourself!! Yes, you may need meds to assist you wih focusing on tasks so that you can get them completed (get that executive functioning area of the brain on board) but please let the doctors do the decision making on that.

Now you've got mom nervous about meds because you started purchasing them 'off the streets' by yourself. Perhaps if you sit down with her and have a good heart to heart talk with her, you might be able to explain all the things that you've been experiencing and how its been creating problems for you at school.

Tell her that it was foolish for you to have bought your own supply of meds but that all you had really been trying to do was solve your problems but you realize you need more help to get to your goals in life. See if you can get her on board by asking her to accompany you to at least one visit with the doctor. Once she sees that you're now going to follow a doctor's advice for using meds (if he/she thinks it might be helpful) she might be more supportive of you.

She's just been scared by you going out and 'doing' drugs without direction from a doctor. You need to earn her trust again because afterall, these are potent medications. Wonderful for us if we truly need them, but dangerous to those who don't require them!

Good luck!

Sounds like it, but take this test to be sure...

Speaking as a doctor who treats ADD/ADHD, try this comprehensive list of ADHD symptoms and see if they apply to you.
