Talking to the Dean of a college about previously made bad grades

Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone has been in this situation or can offer some advice. My first few years of college I made bad grades. I left my ADHD untreated, struggled in my classes as I inconsistently attended class and had no direction. As a result, my GPA was barely over a 2.0. I took a few years off, worked on myself, got back in to a healthy lifestyle, dealt with my ADHD with my psychologist, self education, and meds. When I returned to finish my degree, I had a 3.8 GPA. I want to enter a highly competitive field but with my previous grades, I am at a severe disadvantage. Ninety-five % of the professors of the classes I did poorly in were willing to let me take on extra work to better my grade but it has been too long for them to do something about it. I need to speak with someone higher up and was wondering if any of you have done this or have suggestions as to how to approach this situation?

Thanks for the help!

I don't see it helping....

I see two problems with this affecting anything...

#1 - Protections do not kick in retroactively. If you look at the University's Policy manual, I can almost guarantee without reading it that it contains the following: "You must be registered with Disability Services Office to receive accommodations or services... You must contact Professor in advanced of your service plan... You must be able to perform the expectations of the class...."

#2 - Grading decisions are solely the grounds of the Professor. The only opportunity to appeal a grade is if the Professor violated a major rule (and you can prove it) like Sexual Harassment.

Now, if the professor's are willing to wheel and deal... They may. However, in the school's that I teach, there is some serious scrutiny when you change any grade other than an Incomplete. The longer it has been, the more scrutiny the change gets...

1) I have been receiving accommodations throughout college but did not take advantage of it during my first few years because I didn't want to be different.

2) My professors told me they would be willing to change my grade or have me take on extra work to improve them. But, because of the length of time, they don't have the power to change them. I know at least one is being truthful as I am now taking his class remotely and he granted me an override and special curriculum so I don't need to travel for exams.

Any other thoughts?
