Scared to death now
Hi my name is Kate I am the mother of 3 (almost 4) year old twin boys. We have been having consistent problems over the past year with one of our boys that has escalated over the past two months to the point where I can no longer handle it. We believe he has ADHD based on the symptoms he displays. He is extremely hyperactive all the time, there is never any break in it. He can't concentrate on anything for more than a minute or two at a time, doesn't respond when spoken to, it's like he doesn't even hear us. Lately he has also become increasingly dangerous to himself, doing things such as breaking out of windows and running away (he has done this 5 times in the past week alone), jumping into pools even though he can't swim, turning on the stove and trying to put his hand in the flames, playing with knives even though he's been cut by them before. We have literally turned our house into a prison, nailing all the windows shut, locks and chains on the doors, locked up anything and everything sharp and taken the knobs off the stoves and he still finds ways to get out. He climbs the 8 foot high privacy fence in our backyard and takes off so I can't even take them outside by myself anymore. I've also noticed an increase in the bullying of his brother and other children though that doesn't seem to be as bad. I am at my wit's end knowing what to do. We have tried and tried to get the dr's in our area to help us but they all refuse to prescribe medication for a child his age, even though the child psychologist on our base has documented that he believes the situation calls for them. The worst part is his brother is a little copy cat and will do anything that Conner does. I really don't know what to do at this point, we've tried disciplining the disobedience with no effect, it's like he doesn't even remember it two minutes later, we've tried running off the energy, tried caffeine with sum small effect but not much and tried total structure of every minute of the day and nothings working. I am sleeping on the floor of their room at night now so that he won't get out and run off in the middle of the night like he did a few days ago. I am scared to death that he is going to seriously injure himself or his brother and I just can't get any help. If anyone has any suggestions for managing this I would appreciate it so much I am at my wit's end now.
