Tics after starting Intuniv?

Hi, My 7-year-old son was diagnosed with ADHD in March. We started him on generic Adderall in May and it made him very angry and frustrated. We tried Focalin XR 5mg and it was great for 4 weeks until suddenly he developed a blinking tic. His doctor suggested taking him off and after a week (the tics were almost gone), started him on 1mg of Intuniv. The results have been great as far as hyperactivity but yesterday afternoon (3rd day on Intuniv), the tics returned. I'm devastated. I can't imagine not being able to treat this with medication without causing tics. He's also on Zyrtec so I stopped that to see if it makes a difference. Does anyone have any advice or has this happened to anyone else?

Thanks so much.

ADHD and tics

Regarding tics, it is my understanding that medication does not cause tics, but may make them more likely. People with ADHD typically already have tics. Unfortunately, changing medication propably won't help the tics to go away unless the Dr prescribes a drug specifically for tics in addition to the ADHD medication. Typically ADHD's have one of two kinds of tics. Type 1 is where they have the same tic every time, throughout their life. Type 2 is where the tic changes. This is what my son has. He seems to cycle through different ones (eye blinking, throat clearing, shoulder shrugging). His tics were very suble when he was very young and more obvious once he was medicated. Best of luck with your medicine trials.

Tics after starting Intuniv?

Thank you so much for replying. It turned out that when I stopped the Zyrtec, the tic went away so somehow the Zyrtec and the meds weren't working together. Thanks again.

Interesting information about Zyrtec

Very interesting. My son was put on Intuniv as well to help with the tics but that didn't seem to help much. He has gone from a complete several time a day regimen of ritalin and intuniv to aderall/ritalin to help decrease the tics maybe. But he does take Zyrtec once a day for his allergies. I've not heard before of the Zyrtec causing an issue. May I ask, did you switch allergy meds and if so, what kind are you using now? I have a box of Allegra that we could try. Very interesting.....Thank you for sharing!
