diagnosed by therapist but psychiatrist wouldn't prescribe

I am so frustrated. This is the second time I have been diagnosed with ADHD by a therapist only to have the prescribing Dr decide I was bi-polar instead. I have been on three different bi-polar meds and they don't work. I took FIVE tests that all showed I was ADHD. WHAT IS THE DEAL? I don't understand why these Dr's are so unwilling to treat the ADHD and insist I"m bi polar. I've been on anti depressants for years so I know I have major depressive disorder. I just don't know what to do. I am totally frustrated...

Did they ever explain why?

The training and credentials for both professions vary... as well as the ability levels from within... More importantly, I am less concerned with what label or Dx the professionals give and more concerned with why they came to the conclusion. Has anyone given you an assessment report? What was the method of attaining the diagnosis?

An immediate suspicion, but I would need to look-up to confirm... is that giving ADHD meds to someone that is possibly bipolar could trigger a manic episode. If that is the case, they would want to err on the side of not giving the medication.

However, that is an aside. In reality, ask ALL previous providers (not just the ones that you agree with) for how they derived their diagnoses in written format.

I would trust the ones that do so in the most thorough manner the most. I also suspect that none may be able to do so - or will whip something up after-the-fact....

Did they say why

No they didn't say why, I know how the one came up with ADHD, because of the five tests I took, but the others just gave me a sheet saying what the diagnosis was not how they arrived at that conclusion. I see a new Dr next week and will be sure to ask her how she arrives at the conclusions she arrives at. I did also read a response you made to another person on this forum about how Dr's try to exclude other potential issues before they arrive at ADHD. My Dr did mention this as he said so many of the symptoms overlap. I just thought after three medications, it would be clear I'm not bipolar, but perhaps three meds is no big deal... Thank you so much for your informed responses.

My #1 Pet Peeve about my professional peers....

This bugs me. My #1 Pet Peeve amongst my professional peers is not being able to back up our findings in Plain English. The air of "because I have the credentials and letters after my name" is what makes us look bad. Best of Luck. http://askdreric-schoolpsychologist.blogspot.com/

Pet peeve

Well I did see a new therapist and she told me why she could see how he came up with Bipolar because she had this little mood chart and I answered yes to more than one of the questions. But I said so many of those apply to ADHD as well, and she said that's why she will wait to get to know me better before diagnosing. So there are some good ones out there fortunately and hopefully I've found one :)

You know I just spent some time thinking (and writing) about secondary diagnoses. Read the ADHD scenario and see if that applies to you... It may be a good conversation starter with your therapist...

Frustrated Depressed Low Self Esteem Boredom

These are all me! I have always considered myself to be socially retarded because I was always offending people when I didn't mean to :( I have/Had very few friends and now tend to shy away from social situations. They totally stress me out!
