The training and credentials for both professions vary... as well as the ability levels from within... More importantly, I am less concerned with what label or Dx the professionals give and more concerned with why they came to the conclusion. Has anyone given you an assessment report? What was the method of attaining the diagnosis?

An immediate suspicion, but I would need to look-up to confirm... is that giving ADHD meds to someone that is possibly bipolar could trigger a manic episode. If that is the case, they would want to err on the side of not giving the medication.

However, that is an aside. In reality, ask ALL previous providers (not just the ones that you agree with) for how they derived their diagnoses in written format.

I would trust the ones that do so in the most thorough manner the most. I also suspect that none may be able to do so - or will whip something up after-the-fact....

I see a new Dr next week and will be sure to ask her how she arrives at the conclusions she arrives at. My Dr did mention this as he said so many of the symptoms overlap. I just thought after three medications, it would be clear I'm not bipolar, but perhaps three meds is no big deal... Well I did see a new therapist and she told me why she could see how he came up with Bipolar because she had this little mood chart and I answered yes to more than one of the questions. But I said so many of those apply to ADHD as well, and she said that's why she will wait to get to know me better before diagnosing. So there are some good ones out there fortunately and hopefully I've found one :)

You know I just spent some time thinking (and writing) about secondary diagnoses. Read the ADHD scenario and see if that applies to you... It may be a good conversation starter with your therapist...
