Don't Know What to Do Hi, I have a nine year old who was diagnosed with ADHD around 2nd grade. He is currently on Adderall XR and school says his behavior and school work has been improving, however, at daycare and sometimes at home, he will have a screaming melt down (literally) for about 15 minutes and any thing we've tried to do (or not do) just seems ineffective until his tantrum has run its course. He recently got kicked out of daycare because of this type of behavior in addition to threatening to "kill" someone because they wouldn't show him an item that he was interested in. When I asked him about it, he said that he has trouble controlling his anger. We've tried different discipline techniques to no avail. He's been through several counselors and the latest one is moving out of state and has closed his case. I'm not sure if it is a med adjustment issue, a parenting/discipline issue, social/emotional regulation issue or what. I just feel so lost. Any advice or help would be appreciated. Thank you. Quote

My son was diagnosed with ADHD and began taking Adderall XR in 1st grade. He had terrible meltdowns at the end of the day. His pediatrician sent us to a pediatric psychiatrist, who told us he was reacting to the adderall. He changed the meds to Focalin XR and we saw an immediate relief. Good luck. Hopefully you will soon find a solution to this problem.

Same problem... My son also was initially put on Adderall XR by his pediatrician and his mood swings went through the roof. He became a totally different child. His psychologist recommended a psychiatrist for medication who immediately took him off the Adderall saying it was "not a good choice". He's now on Concerta and doing much better. Not that we don't have the typical ADHD issues, but the temper and mood swings have stopped. Quote

Same problem...

My son also was initially put on Adderall XR by his pediatrician and his mood swings went through the roof. He became a totally different child. His psychologist recommended a psychiatrist for medication who immediately took him off the Adderall saying it was "not a good choice". He's now on Concerta and doing much better. Not that we don't have the typical ADHD issues, but the temper and mood swings have stopped.

Ditto for us. Both my son and daughter had awful meltdowns when the Adderall was wearing off. They were switched to another medication (daughter takes Vyvanse, son was taking Focalin) and there was a huge improvement. Call your doctor, explain the situation, and ask to try something different. It's all trial and error with these medications. Different children react differently. Good luck!
