Frustrated with myself

Hello all, I am 33 yrs old and I was diagnosed with ADHD about 6 mths ago. Everything from this time back now makes sense. My issue is I’ve noticed a pattern about myself, I start a lot of projects and I do not finish them. It’s like I lose interest or I run into a road block and I think to myself “forget it.” It’s beginning to really frustrate me and I don’t know what to do about it. I am currently on Adderall and it has helped A WHOLE LOT. If someone out there has had these problems please let me know what you have done or doing. Thank you.

Time to hyper-focus

Hyper-focus. Get a project done and put to bed. Make your the purpose in your life and let nothing stand in the way. Ignore everything around you until it is done.

Why?

First to prove to you, the only one that matters, that you can get it done. Then use the confidence it gives move on to the next.

Second, to understand what it takes to get it done. Most unsuccessful projects fail within the first five minutes because they weren't thought out in the first place. When I take time to understand the requirements for success of a specific project and tally my assets and liabilities, I'm much more picky about the ones I undertake.

Don't underestimate the value of hyper-focus. My boss today and four jobs ago still sings accolades for a hyper-focus effort that became a turning point in his career.

BTW - I learned after 40 from my son that I'm ADD. I struggled to set aside past failures, look forward to finding a better way and am happy for the opportunity to do so. My boys are luckier to have more life left to capitalize on the assets of ADD and delegate the liabilities. My dad wasn't as lucky and passed without every knowing he was living with one hand tied behind his back.

Wittle projects down.

I used to start a lot of projects, and I got material for a lot of things that I never got done. the clutter that all of these projects created was a slap in my face every time I saw it. Finally, I accepted that I cannot do all of that, and I decided I am only going to keep one project. If it doesn't get done, I won't get another one, or I'll discard the old project if I have been procrastinating on it.

When I build castles in the air, the castles fall.

Great comment, Thorope After years of lots of creativity and lots of unfinished projects, I came to the realization that a little element of a great idea is just that. Now I do my planning, and if things seem to fall into place, I go ahead with it, but if once I start the plan I see that I'm going to need things that are out of my reach, I save the idea for a better time.

Planning

That makes sense, just simply planning before I act. I normally act first. So how long do you give yourself before you start to act? Like how long do you think about it and let it roll around in your mind?

I'm not that formal. Some ideas fall together in the time it takes to brush teeth. Some I've mulled over for years before stumbling on a configuration that fits within my abilities, tools, time and opportunity. I still have a pile of clutter waiting for me to complete or the trash, but they now sit within the 80/20. 80% get done the other 20% doesn't bother me anymore.

Much of life is not what you see, but what you don't see. We stare at a disheveled boy angrily arguing with his parent in front of the open school bus door, but we never notice him patiently waiting with others in his crisp uniform or his mother's happy tears.

Stay Positive

Hi Phil, I hope things work out for you. I’m starting to realize that a multiple of things can help like counseling, medication, and this website. There are always other people out there who have been there, done that, or can point you into the right direction. Keep your head up and don’t be afraid to ask for help.
