Disability benefits

I have a son with ADHD. He was just diagnosed this year. I'm wondering if anyone here has attempted to get disability benefits and how did that work out for you? How long is the process? Did they give you a hard time? I know what they list as the criteria for receiving benefits, but I'm just wondering how it went for people who have actually been through it.

Thanks!

IWith Bi-polar illness as well as ADHD, I went through denial and appeals from the Social Security system for over 10 years. I finally received benefits (as well as a healthy back-payment check.) I'd never worked more than part-time, however, and receve less than $700 a month. (Not enough to live on, is it? To get Disability insurance, you need lots of documentation, not only a diagnosis, but also of failing significantly at work related tasks, ie: falling apart for weeks on end, losing jobs due to anxiety or bad temper and more. He must show moderate to significant impairment in a number of areas of life. Pay someone in the know to help you fill out the forms. If you can, do yourself a favor and get a Disability lawyer from the start. They work for a percentage of the settlement, so most won't even touch your case unless its worth it to them and there is a good possibility of winning.

Have you tried the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation for help that could make him employable? If they're well-funded right now, they have a lot of services available. They helped me get back to work. Goodwill is another option- offering job coaches and less stressful work.

Each State is different

Each state is different even though the SSI program is Federal (Regions may have a different "flavor"), so I would start with the State Government and whatever they call their departments.

I have completed more than my share of SSI verification forms-- and ADHD alone would be a real stretch. They really do not ask for Diagnosis alone, they ask very specific answers... like, "can the person make change at a cash register" or "are they physically incapable for being transported to a work site."

Even in CA, which I have self-designated the Capital of "working-the-system" (We have 12% of the U.S. population, but 34% of the people on public assistance.), I have not seen many ADHD-only approvals.
