Interviewing people
My job requires that I intently pay attention to complainants' stories, situations.
I have adult adhd and am VERY worried about my lack of attention.
Last night, my husband timed me while he told me about tires, cars, wheels, etc. When I snapped my fingers, he stopped the timer - that was when I "lost" track of the conversation. It was 30 seconds.
I DID notice that sometimes I STOP @ a point in conversations when I am trying to "picture" something in particular.
Here's an example: "My son's ex wife lives in Rochester. Last month, she and her live-in boyfriend, George, ..you know George from the tire shop..."
OK...I have STOPPED at "George at the tire shop" and spend the next SEVERAL seconds or minutes trying to picture who George is. So, I lose a major part of the conversation.
Or, "What we need to do is replace the tires on the cars you and Jerry drive. We'll leave the old tires on the '03. I'll take the wheels off of the '03 and put them on your car. Jerry wants the wheels off of your car...."
OK....I have STOPPED at "the wheels on the '03" because I'm trying to picture this car & the wheels. He goes on, but I don't comprehend antoher word..
My job will depend on my being alert & following people's conversations.
Severely need advice.
Not on any meds bec. of the horrible side effects. I do better w/o meds, in everything EXCEPT concentrating. It is so horrible, I nearly CRY. So many times, I stand there, looking at the person, thinking, "OH my gosh, I cannot THINK!!" And, yes...they have questions that I HAVE to have answers for (it is my job).
OH!! OR, someone will be talking to be about, say, a clock they bought. They can say that it has a pretty chime & my mind goes to my granny's "grandfather" clock from when I was little & I see & here it. In my mind, I'm back in her living room....So, the person I'm talking to is just rambling bec. I'm already "gone".
