PLEASE HELP-- WOMAN-48, UNDIAGNOSED ADHD, NORTH CAROLINA - NO INSURANCE -- NEEDS DIAGNOSIS, RESOURCES & ASSISTANCE

As a 48 year old woman, I am now certain that have lived the duration of my life with ADHD. I have been coping by attempting to over-compensate for my shortcomings with this disorder. However, I am no longer able to do so. I have literally hit a mental emotional wall with my ADHD, my attention span, and my inability to complete taks. I am desperate for help. My eldest daughter (30 years old) was diagnosed with ADHD last year. I have since read a wealth of literature and articles on ADHD, and now have answers to many questions that I had about myself, and my symptoms.

I presently reside in Fayetteville, NC, and due to the recession, I am unemployed and without healthcare or health insurance. Unfortunately, I am not eligible for any medical assistance or health care assistance from Cumberland County, or the State of North Carolina. I truly need help. Any assistance or resources would enable me to just survive. If anyone out there is knowledgeable about where and how I can be seen, diagnosed, and/or be provided with resouces for my ADHD I would be ever so grateful.

With A Prayer In My Heart,

#1 resource in the USA

United Way's program, First Call for Help is a wonderful resource for community assistance. You call up and tell them what kind of help you're looking for. There are community organizations that do all sorts of things, depending on where you live and the giving abilities of the community. Usually the number is 211, from a land line phone. If, like many people, you only have a cell phone you may have to look up the number for cell phone calls. I suggest you keep the number handy, you'll probably either use it or find someone to give it to over the years ahead.

OK, I did a search and it wasn't easy to find this. No wonder you're feeling lost when your resources are buried online! Here's the link to the 211 list I could find: http://www.leecountyunitedway.org/documents/Lee211Directory.pdf

There is a United Way in Fayetteville, NC, but I cannot find a link or any information on their website for people to get help. What kind of United Way is that? They take but where's the giving? Well, I'm a Northerner from a wonderfully supportive state where we have sliding fee scales and health care for people with disabilities. It's not a Catch 22 situation around here, our state wants its people to be healthy. Sick people can't be productive and pay taxes, so it's in everybody's interest to have a healthy population.

I wish you all the best in your search for assistance. I know you'll find it and feel better soon.

United way helps?

I'm in need of similar assistance but in the St. Louis Mo area. I have been advised to contact United way before, only to be told by United way that they dont offer services or references, they only donate money to different organizations, and could not elaborate on who they were or if any would be able to help me. Have you actually gone through your United way ? Did they really help you? I wonder what the difference is between yours and the one here in St. Louis if yours did help you? WIsh my United Way was like yours.

Thanks

Dan
