High Schooler academic struggles project related wrk

My son's teacher's all acknowledge that my son is bright and talented, but are all frustrated because he never gets his work in on time. So he has been penalized significantly. He could have an A/B average, but now how has a low C average He attends a private school, so the school does not have to follow an IEP. Is it unrealistic to request flex time/extended time for him? He gets extended time on tests but he does not get extended time for projects. The majority of the grading is more project related than test related. Many would argue that it is not realistic for him to get flex time because in the real world one will always have to make deadlines. Plus when he goes to college he probably will not get flex time eiether. Thanks

Sorry you are going through this

It sounds almost exactly what we are going thru with my son. The difference is mine is in public school. The reason I pulled him out of private school was because they were ill equipped to deal with this. I did not get an IEP until last year but even with it this year I have to CONSTANTLY stay on top of the teachers. My ex-husband and I are a very good team and we fight tooth and nail for our son to get the support and extra time he needs. The plan we have in action is that the teachers are supposed to email us if he misses an assignment. This has not worked well as the teachers don't adhere - but when I eventually find out about missed assignments he does get extra time to get caught up. I have ADD too and I work long hours which makes it really hard. Plus the drama in the house to get him to do his work is really hard. But I'm determined one way or another to get him through high school to his potential. He wants to go to med school and study brain function. maybe generations down the road will benefit. Listen - fight for your kid - be a squeaky wheel - bring letters from doctors - get a lawyer - whatever you have to do - I'll be praying for you.

High Schooler academic struggles with project related work.

Dear Paulinab

Thank you soo much your prayers are much appreciated. I have been so passive for so long, mostly due to the fact that he is riding on a full scholarship from the school, I believe that they need to be educated about the disability. My son is not the first nor will he be the last to enter into that school who has ADD. May the Lord bless you as well
