Problems With School Following 504 Plan ...
I've had similar problems with my son's school. My youngest son has had a 504 Plan since October, 2008, when he was in the 6th grade. His elementary teacher was wonderful and put a lot of effort into implementing the necessary strategies and accommodations to help my son. I had to be persistent to get the rest of the school staff to help, but they did get on board and find additional strategies to help my son. overall, I was very pleased with the way the staff followed our 504 Plan during my son's 6th grade school year.
When my son went to junior high, I had to be more firm, but the staff reluctantly did try to help my son. They did not follow our 504 Plan closely though.
When we moved in January, 2010, my son attended a new junior high school, which has turned into a nightmare! I desperately tried to get help from the school, but they continually ignored my pleas for help. I informed everyone that my son has a 504 Plan, but they violated many of the items on my son's 504 Plan.
In the process of trying to get help for my son, and trying to get the school to follow my son's 504 Plan, I think I've make quite a few new enemies! We had a meeting several weeks ago to go over my son's existing 504 Plan, make some revisions, and set up a date to start the process for an evaluation and IEP (August 19th, 2010).
My son is in summer school, and I've heard from two of the three teachers. They both have acknowledged my son's 504 Plan, and one of the teachers (out of three) has told me that he is implementing some of the strategies to try and help my son.
I'm still very frustrated and upset with how this new school has treated us ....
