It's not just people with ADHD who are overcome with details

I don't have ADHD, but I and many others are at the breaking point with details that we have to keep in our heads, and tasks we have to do. Every new technology feature or service arrives with all kinds of baggage - how to use the program, where to save it, when to open it, a new identity and password, etc. I have fallen behind on a major responsibility for 2 years in a row, and no amount of self-talk has gotten me to the desk where I need to take care of it. Alarmed at how serious this failure is, and the consequences it entails, I have brought it up to my therapist on two occasions. Both times he said to me, "You would be amazed at how many of my patients are having this same problem." (He had no practical advice to offer.) So it's not just people with ADHD who are having trouble with staying on track. It's probably a national dilemma that no one wants to address because it would mean putting the brakes on our "free" market.

Yep. Lijah, you make excellent points. I have heard this from other people as well.

And this is why the time is fast approaching when, little by little, more and more of us are going to become cyborgs. Maybe not in the next 10 years, or even the next 25, but beyond that... if Moore's Law continues to hold true and advances in Artificial Intelligence (hereafter referred to as "AI") and human-assistive implants are made, it is almost an inevitability.

Okay -- yes, ha ha, laugh, laugh if you will and don your tinfoil hat and say look at the crazy futurist lady and listen to the nutty things she is saying - surely she has watched Terminator one too many times. ;-)

If you don't believe me, perhaps you will believe noted AI scientist and inventor Ray Kurzweil, author of _The Age of Spiritual Machines_. He said this back in 2002 -- http://www.kurzweilai.net/we-are-becoming-cyborgs

A notable excerpt:

Researchers at MIT and Harvard are developing neural implants to replace damaged retinas. There are brain implants for Parkinson’s patients that communicate directly with the ventral posterior nucleus and subthalmic nucleus regions of the brain to reverse the most devastating symptoms of this disease. An implant for people with cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis communicates with the ventral lateral thalamus and has been effective in controlling tremors. "Rather than treat the brain like soup, adding chemicals that enhance or suppress certain neurotransmitters," says Rick Trosch, an American physician helping to pioneer these therapies, "we’re now treating it like circuitry."

So I'm actually quite serious. And I think that, when that day comes, all of us (with or without ADD) will heave a great sigh of relief because we'll actually be able to have the storage space and processing power to handle all this stuff.

Of course that, in and of itself, will inevitably accelerate our rate of progress. I wonder what will be next for us beyond that stage in our evolution!

Fun to think about, and maybe a little scary too, if only because...wow -- what a brave new world it will be, yes?
